Alberta will remain a province of Canada, and its voters have said so by a wide margin. In the provincial referendum held on Monday, 19 October, Albertans rejected the proposal to begin the legal process toward a later, binding vote on separation, choosing instead the option that Alberta should remain in Canada. CBC News projected a remain win on Question 10 shortly after midnight local time, and the unofficial counts published through Tuesday kept the margin at roughly three to one. For Alberta's large Punjabi community, concentrated in Edmonton and Calgary, the result settles, for now, a question that had hung over the province's future, its politics and its immigration debates all year.

What do the numbers say?

Elections Alberta counts the ballots by hand, with Question 10 reported first, and its early unofficial tally on Tuesday morning showed 941,204 votes for remaining in Canada against 288,259 for starting the separation process, out of 1,229,463 valid votes on that question. A later unofficial count, reported at 1:03 am mountain time, put remain at 1,023,842 votes, or 76.3 percent, against 317,797, or 23.7 percent, for the separation process option. Counting can take up to 48 hours as returning offices enter results, and Elections Alberta will publish the official results on 29 October. Advance voting accounted for the bulk of the ballots reported early, and more than a million ballots had already been cast by 15 October, before referendum day itself.

What exactly did Question 10 ask?

The referendum contained ten questions, but only Question 10 dealt with Alberta's place in Canada. Option 1 read that Alberta should remain a province in Canada. Option 2 would have directed the provincial government to begin the legal process required under the Canadian Constitution to hold a later, binding referendum on separation. Both Premier Danielle Smith and Prime Minister Mark Carney had made clear during the campaign that a vote for Option 2 would not have taken Alberta out of the country by itself. It would only have started a process toward a second vote. Smith, who put the questions on the ballot, had urged a yes on the other nine questions while saying she herself voted to remain, and she has said she will not hold a second independence referendum while she is premier if the remain side wins.

How have leaders responded?

Prime Minister Mark Carney, who had spent the previous week asking Albertans to vote no to the nine other questions and to stay in Canada, said Albertans had made a clear choice and that Albertans and all Canadians will move forward together with renewed purpose and high ambition. Premier Smith wrote that Albertans have voted for a stronger Alberta in a united Canada, and she was scheduled to address the province on Tuesday evening. The Assembly of First Nations also welcomed the result on Tuesday. National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak said First Nations and Albertan voters turned out in huge numbers and stood up for a shared future in Canada built on Treaty and sharing, thanking the Chiefs and citizens of Treaties 6, 7 and 8. She said the AFN looks forward to next week's First Nations and First Ministers meeting, and has invited Smith and all First Ministers to a Day of Ceremony on 25 October.

Why it matters for Punjabi Albertans

Alberta is home to one of the largest Punjabi communities in Canada, and Edmonton was already in the diaspora headlines this month: a Sikhs for Justice voting event was held in the city on 18 October, the day before the provincial referendum, a proximity that caused public confusion between two very different votes. The provincial ballot itself also touched diaspora life directly, because the other nine questions, still being counted, cover immigration rules and constitutional changes, areas Smith treated as a package for which she sought a mandate and Carney dismissed as questions that did not need a referendum.
