Kartarpur Corridor Reopening Urged by Punjab

The Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, adopted a resolution demanding the immediate reopening of the Kartarpur Corridor, calling on the Central government to engage with Pakistan so that pilgrims can again travel safely and without interruption to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib. Bains told the House that the corridor is far more than a physical route: it stands as a symbol of religious freedom, human kinship and shared cultural heritage. He said the passage connects deeply with the emotions of millions of devotees worldwide and reflects the pain of families separated during the Partition of 1947. The teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, he said, transcend geographic borders and show humanity the path of unity, tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

Why is the corridor closed?

The corridor links Dera Baba Nanak in Punjab's Gurdaspur district with Gurdwara Darbar Sahib at Kartarpur in Pakistan, the place where Guru Nanak Dev Ji spent the last years of his life. Opened in November 2019, it allowed Indian pilgrims visa-free day travel to the shrine. India suspended the corridor on 7 May 2025 following Operation Sindoor and the hostilities with Pakistan that month, and it has remained shut since, leaving devotees unable to make the short journey across the border.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann also spoke in favour of reopening the corridor during the session, linking it to his wish to lead a delegation to Kartarpur and Nankana Sahib. The demand has been raised repeatedly by Sikh organisations and political parties in Punjab since the closure, and the Assembly's resolution now puts the state's elected House formally on record. The decision itself rests with the Central government, which handles relations with Pakistan and the corridor's security arrangements.

ਬੈਂਸ ਨੇ ਸਦਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਲਾਂਘਾ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਇੱਕ ਰਸਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਆਜ਼ਾਦੀ, ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਸਾਂਝ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਂਝੀ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰਕ ਵਿਰਾਸਤ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਕ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਰਸਤਾ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਭਰ ਦੇ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਸ਼ਰਧਾਲੂਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਭਾਵਨਾਵਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ 1947 ਦੀ ਵੰਡ ਵੇਲੇ ਵਿੱਛੜੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਰਦ ਨੂੰ ਦਰਸਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਿੱਖਿਆਵਾਂ ਭੂਗੋਲਿਕ ਸਰਹੱਦਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਉੱਪਰ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਮਨੁੱਖਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਏਕਤਾ, ਸਹਿਣਸ਼ੀਲਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀਪੂਰਨ ਸਹਿਹੋਂਦ ਦਾ ਰਾਹ ਵਿਖਾਉਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।

ਇਹ ਲਾਂਘਾ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਗੁਰਦਾਸਪੁਰ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਦੇ ਡੇਰਾ ਬਾਬਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਦੇ ਕਰਤਾਰਪੁਰ ਸਥਿਤ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹੀ ਉਹ ਅਸਥਾਨ ਹੈ, ਜਿੱਥੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਆਖ਼ਰੀ ਸਾਲ ਬਿਤਾਏ ਸਨ। ਨਵੰਬਰ 2019 ਵਿੱਚ ਖੁੱਲ੍ਹੇ ਇਸ ਲਾਂਘੇ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਸ਼ਰਧਾਲੂ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਵੀਜ਼ੇ ਇੱਕ ਦਿਨ ਦੀ ਯਾਤਰਾ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਸਨ। ਭਾਰਤ ਨੇ ਅਪਰੇਸ਼ਨ ਸਿੰਦੂਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ 7 ਮਈ 2025 ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਲਾਂਘਾ ਬੰਦ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਦੋਂ ਤੋਂ ਇਹ ਬੰਦ ਹੀ ਹੈ।

ਸਦਨ ਭਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਮਰਥਨ

ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਮਾਨ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਸੈਸ਼ਨ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਲਾਂਘਾ ਖੋਲ੍ਹਣ ਦੇ ਹੱਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੋਲਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਰਤਾਰਪੁਰ ਅਤੇ ਨਨਕਾਣਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜਾਣ ਦੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਇੱਛਾ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜਿਆ। ਬੰਦ ਹੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਸਿੱਖ ਜਥੇਬੰਦੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਿਆਸੀ ਪਾਰਟੀਆਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਇਹ ਮੰਗ ਵਾਰ-ਵਾਰ ਚੁੱਕੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ। ਹੁਣ ਵਿਧਾਨ ਸਭਾ ਦੇ ਮਤੇ ਨਾਲ ਸੂਬੇ ਦਾ ਚੁਣਿਆ ਸਦਨ ਰਸਮੀ ਤੌਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਇਸ ਮੰਗ ਦੇ ਹੱਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ। ਫ਼ੈਸਲਾ ਕੇਂਦਰ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਨੇ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਨਾਲ ਸਬੰਧ ਅਤੇ ਲਾਂਘੇ ਦੀ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹੱਥ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ।
