Mansa Police Seize Body Headed to Jhota Protest

Tension gripped Mansa on Tuesday after police took away the body of a 35-year-old man from his family as they tried to carry it to the protest site over the killing of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota. Activist Lakha Sidhana and several others were detained, The Indian Express, Babushahi and BBC News Punjabi reported.

What happened in Mansa?

The dead man was identified as Daljit Singh of Bhamme Kalan village. His family and villagers blocked the Sirsa-Mansa road, alleging he died of a drug overdose and demanding action against local drug peddlers, The Indian Express reported. His wife and mother said he had been trying to stay off drugs.

When the family tried to take the body to the Jhota morcha in Mansa, police barricaded the route. A standoff followed, and police took the body away. Videos of the scene were shared by opposition leaders, drawing sharp criticism.

What do the police say?

Mansa SSP Vaibhav Chaudhary disputed the overdose claim. He said that around 11 am police were told a body was lying by a roadside, and that their inquiry found someone had arrived in a vehicle and left it there. A murder case is being registered, and he said three main accused had been rounded up, as reported by The Indian Express and BBC News Punjabi.

The SSP said "mild force" was used to maintain law and order, that police personnel were injured, and that an attempt-to-murder case was being registered over the confrontation. He said the body had been taken out of the district for a post-mortem and that the family would be allowed to perform the last rites. He also said peaceful protest is a democratic right.

BBC News Punjabi noted that the actual cause of death will be clear only after the post-mortem report.

Who was detained?

After the confrontation, police raided the main morcha site, where Lakha Sidhana, Bhana Sidhu and Mohanjit Sheron were among those detained, according to Babushahi. The SSP said Sidhana was held for allegedly trying to disturb law and order. The Indian Express reported that Sidhu later released a video saying he had escaped custody and returned to the site.

How have political parties reacted?

Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa asked how many more families must suffer before Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann takes responsibility. Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal alleged the government used force on a grieving family, and Congress leader Amrinder Singh Raja Warring called the seizure a violation of the family's grief. BJP's Ravneet Singh Bittu demanded President's rule, BBC News Punjabi reported.

The morcha, now in its 15th day, is being held by Parvinder Singh Jhota's family and supporters. ਮਾਨਸਾ ਦੇ ਐੱਸਐੱਸਪੀ ਵੈਭਵ ਚੌਧਰੀ ਨੇ ਓਵਰਡੋਜ਼ ਦੇ ਦਾਅਵੇ ਨੂੰ ਗ਼ਲਤ ਦੱਸਿਆ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮੁਤਾਬਕ ਲਗਭਗ 11 ਵਜੇ ਸੜਕ ਕਿਨਾਰੇ ਦੇਹ ਪਈ ਹੋਣ ਦੀ ਸੂਚਨਾ ਮਿਲੀ ਅਤੇ ਜਾਂਚ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਆਇਆ ਕਿ ਕੋਈ ਗੱਡੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਆ ਕੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੁੱਟ ਗਿਆ। ਕਤਲ ਦਾ ਕੇਸ ਦਰਜ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮੁਤਾਬਕ ਤਿੰਨ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੁਲਜ਼ਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹਿਰਾਸਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।

ਐੱਸਐੱਸਪੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ ਵਿਵਸਥਾ ਬਣਾਈ ਰੱਖਣ ਲਈ "ਹਲਕਾ ਬਲ" ਵਰਤਿਆ ਗਿਆ, ਪੁਲਿਸ ਮੁਲਾਜ਼ਮ ਜ਼ਖ਼ਮੀ ਹੋਏ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਟਕਰਾਅ ਸਬੰਧੀ ਇਰਾਦਾ ਕਤਲ ਦਾ ਕੇਸ ਦਰਜ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਦੇਹ ਪੋਸਟਮਾਰਟਮ ਲਈ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹੇ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਭੇਜੀ ਗਈ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਸਸਕਾਰ ਦੀ ਇਜਾਜ਼ਤ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਸ਼ਾਂਤਮਈ ਧਰਨਾ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਜਮਹੂਰੀ ਹੱਕ ਹੈ।
