Punjab's final electoral rolls for all 117 Assembly constituencies were published on Monday, October 12, 2026, closing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in the state. The Chief Electoral Officer's statement puts the final roll at 2,01,00,727 electors, about 13.6 lakh fewer than the 2,14,61,043 registered before the exercise began, with the 2027 Assembly election due early next year.

What do the final numbers show?

According to CEO Anindita Mitra's statement, the final roll has 1,03,76,026 male, 97,24,195 female and 506 third-gender electors. As on June 9, 2026, Punjab had 2,14,61,043 electors: 1,11,76,866 men, 1,02,83,478 women and 699 third-gender voters. The draft roll published on August 13 had 1,93,94,435 names, so the final roll is 3.64 per cent larger than the draft. A final roll for service voters, with October 1, 2026 as the qualifying date, was also published.

Why did the roll shrink?

Mitra told The Tribune that the 6.3 per cent fall came from deaths, voters who permanently moved out of the state, voters found absent at their addresses during the survey, and duplicate entries. The Tribune reported that 20,66,608 names were removed from the draft stage and that 7,97,263 new electors, including first-time and women voters, were enrolled. When the SIR started, there were 12.80 lakh voters who could not be matched with the 2003 rolls and about 22 lakh with discrepancies, the paper learnt.

How did the SIR run?

House-to-house enumeration ran from June 25 to August 3. The notice and hearing phase, with claims and objections, ran from August 13 to October 8. The Hindu reported, quoting the CEO, that 35,49,036 electors were issued notices and 86,038 of them were marked ineligible after verification and speaking orders. Mitra said booth-level agents of the political parties helped with verification and that separate lists of duplicate voters and death certificates were kept for transparency. Copies of the rolls were handed to representatives of the recognised political parties.

What can a voter with a missing name do?

Residents whose names are missing can still apply for inclusion online through the ECI Net app or by submitting Form 6 to their Booth Level Officer, ABP reported. The rolls can be checked on the CEO Punjab website, the voters.eci.gov.in portal and at the offices of District Election Officers, Electoral Registration Officers and BLOs.

SIR has been one of the sharpest political fights of the year. The Hindu has reported that AAP and Congress raised concerns over the exercise in Punjab ahead of the 2027 polls, and its photo from Monday shows Panjab University students marching towards the State Election Commission office against SIR. The present Assembly's term ends on March 16, 2027.
