About the book
Amrit Lehran (Waves of Nectar), published in 1936, is the first book of Amrita Pritam, and one of the most remarkable debuts in Punjabi literature, because its author was seventeen years old. A teenage girl, writing in Lahore in the mid-1930s, publishing a collection of poems under her own name: in the Punjab of that decade, this was itself a revolutionary act, whatever the poems contained.
The title gives the flavour of the book. Amrit is nectar, the drink of immortality, the sacred sweet, and lehran are waves. The poems are waves of sweetness: romantic, devotional, intoxicated with language itself. This is the young Amrita Kaur (she had not yet married Pritam Singh and taken the name Pritam) discovering what her voice could do, trying metres, trying images, falling in love with poetry in public.
The collection belongs to the late romantic phase of Punjabi poetry, the world of nature-worship and mystical longing that the young Pritam inherited and would soon outgrow. Readers who meet her first through the fierce Partition elegies or the stark late poems of Kagaz te Canvas (1981) may be surprised by the softness here. But the softness is the point: this is the beginning of the arc, and the arc is one of the great careers in Indian literature.
Themes and craft
The dominant note of Amrit Lehran is romantic wonder, at nature, at love, at the divine, at the poet's own awakening sensibility. These are poems of a girl becoming a poet: the moon, the river, the beloved (still abstract, still idealised), God addressed as intimate. The influence of the romantic and mystical traditions is everywhere, the Sufi imagery of divine love, the folk motifs of separation and union, filtered through an adolescent's absolute sincerity.
What distinguishes the collection from mere juvenilia is the confidence of the music. Even at seventeen, Pritam had an ear: the lines sing, the rhythms hold, the images land. The poems are not yet the stripped, conversational lyrics of her maturity, they are more ornate, more perfumed, but the gift is unmistakable. You can hear, in these early waves, the undertow that would later pull her toward the great subjects: love as a serious matter, language as a sacred one.
There is also, for the historically minded reader, the quiet thrill of context. A girl writing like this in 1936, publishing it, putting her name to longing and devotion, was claiming a space that Punjabi literature had barely begun to offer women. Amrit Lehran is not a feminist manifesto; it is something more basic and more brave: a young woman's inner life, printed and bound, in a world that preferred women silent. Everything Pritam later became is latent here, like a seed.
Amrita Pritam (1919–2005) published Amrit Lehran as Amrita Kaur, aged seventeen, in Lahore, the city where she had grown up after her birth in Gujranwala, where her mother had died when she was eleven, and where she would soon marry Pritam Singh at sixteen and take the name by which the world knows her.
The debut worked: she was noticed, encouraged, and published again. Between 1936 and 1943 she produced several more poetry collections, establishing herself as the leading young woman poet in Punjabi. Then came Partition, the flight from Lahore to Delhi in 1947, and the transformation of the romantic girl into the fierce, plainspoken woman writer of Ajj Aakhaan Waris Shah Nu, Pinjar (1950), Sunehade (1956, the Sahitya Akademi Award, the first woman to win it for Punjabi), Rasidi Ticket (1976) and Kagaz te Canvas (1981, the Jnanpith, the first woman to win it at all).
She wrote some hundred books, received the Padma Shri (1969) and Padma Vibhushan (2004), sat in the Rajya Sabha (1986), and died in Delhi in 2005. But every one of those hundred books began here, with a seventeen-year-old's waves of nectar.
Reception and legacy
Amrit Lehran was received as a promising debut, and promise, in this case, was extravagantly kept. Literary historians now read it as the opening chapter of the most important career in modern Punjabi letters: the book that announced a voice which would, within two decades, remake what Punjabi poetry could say and who could say it.
The collection's particular legacy is as a beginning. It is the fixed point from which Pritam's development can be measured, from romantic girl to Partition witness to confessional lover to philosophical elder. Teachers of Punjabi literature use it to show students where the arc starts; biographers use it to show how early the gift declared itself.
For the general reader, Amrit Lehran offers something rarer than literary-historical interest: the chance to watch a great writer being born. The poems are uneven, first books are, but the moments of beauty are real, and the courage of the book, the sheer fact of it, has not diminished in ninety years.
Read it if
Read it if you love Amrita Pritam and want to meet her at seventeen, before history happened to her. Read it if you are interested in how great writers begin, the distance between this book and Kagaz te Canvas, forty-five years later, is the most instructive in Punjabi literature. And read it if you want to remember what debut poetry can be at its bravest: not a career move, but a girl pouring nectar into print and daring the world to drink.
