About the book

Pavitar Papi (The Holy Sinner), published in 1942, is Nanak Singh's most beloved novel after Chitta Lahu, and for many readers, his most moving. Where the earlier book was a broad social canvas, Pavitar Papi is an intimate moral drama: the story of a young man whose every 'sin' is committed out of goodness, and who is destroyed by the very conscience that makes him noble. Written in 1942, it became an instant classic, was translated into Hindi and several other Indian languages, and is now in its twenty-eighth Punjabi reprint.

The title states the novel's paradox. A papi is a sinner; pavitar means holy, pure. Kedar Nath, the watchmaker at the story's centre, sins repeatedly: he takes another man's livelihood, deceives a family, loves where he believes he has no right to love. And every one of these sins is committed in the service of others. The novel asks a question that has no clean answer: what do we call a man whose wrongdoing is all done for right reasons?

In 1968 the novel was adapted into a Punjabi film that became a blockbuster, carrying Kedar's story to audiences who had never opened the book. More recently, Navdeep Suri's English translation, Hymns in Blood, the first-ever English rendering of this Punjabi classic, brought it to a new generation of readers across India and the diaspora.

Plot and themes

Kedar, orphaned and penniless, comes to Rawalpindi in search of work and finds employment as a watchmaker. Then comes the blow: he discovers, to his horror, that he has taken away Panna Lal's job, the only source of sustenance for Panna Lal's family, whose debts are mounting by the day. Panna Lal, losing all hope of marrying his daughter off and settling his debts, writes Kedar a letter blaming him for his misfortune and goes missing.

Kedar's attempts to find the man fail, and guilt takes hold of him completely. He decides to shoulder every responsibility of Panna Lal's family, supporting them, assuring them that Panna Lal is safe and away on business in Bombay. Then the complication that gives the novel its ache: Kedar falls in love with Veena, Panna Lal's daughter. But his guilt-ridden conscience compels him to suppress his love. He cannot court the daughter of the man he believes he has ruined; he can only serve the family in silence.

The middle of the novel tightens this knot. Kedar is confronted with an impossible choice between saving Panna Lal's family from homelessness and pursuing Veena single-mindedly. He chooses duty, again and again, at mounting cost to himself. Years pass; Kedar, now a master watchmaker, is known as 'Mister Kamal' in Amritsar. Panna Lal, still searching, finally finds him, and brings the news that crushes Kedar entirely: Veena is dead. Kedar, already suffering from a severe cough and spitting blood, tells his story to a Sikh shopkeeper, who sends a telegram to Panna Lal at Kedar's request. Kedar dies shortly after; Panna Lal and Maya arrive for his final rites. The saintly sinner is gone, and only then is his sacrifice fully understood.

The novel's great theme is the morality of intention versus the morality of consequence. Every major religion honours self-sacrifice, yet Kedar's self-sacrifice is built on deception, the lie about Bombay, the suppressed love, the stolen identity as 'Mister Kamal'. Nanak Singh refuses to resolve this cleanly. Is Kedar a saint or a sinner? The novel's answer is the title: he is both, and the both-ness is the point. A second theme is guilt as a life sentence, Kedar's conscience never acquits him, and the reader is left wondering whether his suffering was noble or merely wasteful. The book's power lies in keeping both readings alive to the final page.

Nanak Singh (1897–1971), the father of the Punjabi novel, wrote Pavitar Papi at the height of his powers, a decade after Chitta Lahu (1932) had made him famous. Born poor and largely self-educated, a survivor of Jallianwala Bagh (1919) and a jail term in 1922, he had by 1942 become the central figure of Punjabi prose, the writer who secularised Punjabi fiction and turned it toward contemporary life.

Pavitar Papi shows his mature method: character as the determinant of incident, incident as the illustration of character. The psychology is finer here than in the more schematic Chitta Lahu; Kedar is a genuinely complex creation, neither hero nor victim but something more interesting, a good man in a trap of his own conscience. Nanak Singh would go on to win the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1962 for Ik Miyan Do Talwaran, and India issued a postage stamp in his honour in 1998.

Reception and legacy

The novel was popular immediately and won literary acclaim as a genuine Nanak Singh classic, the rare book that satisfies both the common reader and the critic. Its translation into Hindi and other Indian languages spread it across the subcontinent, and the 1968 film adaptation made Kedar's story part of Punjab's shared cultural memory. The twenty-eight Punjabi reprints tell their own story: this is a book Punjab has never stopped reading.

Critics have valued Pavitar Papi as Nanak Singh's most psychologically subtle novel, the one where his romantic idealism and his moral seriousness fuse most completely. The 'holy sinner' paradox entered the language as a way of talking about well-intentioned wrongdoing, and Kedar joined Gurdei and Bachan Singh in the small gallery of Nanak Singh characters every Punjabi reader knows by name.

Navdeep Suri's Hymns in Blood has given the novel its most significant recent afterlife, introducing Kedar to English readers as a classic of Indian moral fiction, a book that belongs on the same shelf as the great nineteenth-century novels of conscience it resembles.

Read it if

Read it if Chitta Lahu impressed you but felt schematic, this is Nanak Singh with a scalpel instead of a hammer. Read it if you are drawn to fiction about guilt, duty and impossible moral choices, from Dostoevsky to Premchand. And read it if you want the Punjabi novel at its most tender: for all its tragedy, Pavitar Papi is a book about love, love as service, love as renunciation, love that asks for nothing back.
