Nanak Singh (4 July 1897 to 28 December 1971), born Hans Raj in Chak Hamid, Jhelum district, was a Punjabi novelist, poet and songwriter honoured as the father of the Punjabi novel. He wrote Chitta Lahu and the Jallianwala Bagh poem Khooni Vaisakhi, and won the Sahitya Akademi Award.
Early life: a writer with almost no schooling
Nanak Singh was born Hans Raj on 4 July 1897 in Chak Hamid, in the Jhelum district of undivided Punjab, in what is today Pakistan. He came from a poor Punjabi Hindu family, and poverty kept his formal education to little beyond the fourth grade, as his publisher HarperCollins records. He taught himself through reading and listening, began writing verses on historical events while still young, and then wrote devotional songs encouraging Sikhs to join the Gurdwara Reform Movement. Drawn to Sikhism, he adopted the faith and took the name Nanak Singh.
His first book, Satguru Mehma, a collection of hymns in praise of the Sikh Gurus, appeared in 1918 and was his first commercial success. It is a remarkable start for a writer with almost no schooling: within a few years the hymn writer would become a witness to one of the defining atrocities of British rule, and then the founder of a literary form.
What happened to Nanak Singh at Jallianwala Bagh?
On 13 April 1919 Nanak Singh, aged twenty-two, went with two friends to the gathering at Jallianwala Bagh in ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ, held to protest against the Rowlatt Act. When British troops opened fire on the unarmed crowd, both his friends were killed. He survived, unconscious and unnoticed among the dead, as HarperCollins describes in its edition of his poem.
Out of that day came Khooni Vaisakhi (Bloody Baisakhi), a long poem in Punjabi that narrated the events leading up to the massacre and its aftermath, and attacked colonial rule directly. Published in May 1920, it was banned soon afterwards. The poem was then lost for some sixty years before a copy was rediscovered. In 2019, for the centenary of the massacre, HarperCollins India published it in a bilingual edition: the first English translation, by the poet's grandson Navdeep Suri, alongside the Punjabi original, with essays by Suri, the scholar H. S. Bhatia and the journalist Justin Rowlatt.
Jail, the Akali movement and the first novels
Nanak Singh joined the Akali movement and edited Akali newspapers, work the British watched closely. He was charged with taking part in unlawful political activities and sent to Borstal Jail in Lahore. His second book of poetry, Zakhmi Dil (Wounded Heart), published in January 1923, described the treatment of peaceful Sikh protesters during the Guru ka Bagh Morcha, and was banned within two weeks.
Jail became his writing room. He wrote extensively there, and the discipline of those years fed the fiction that followed. His first major success as a novelist was ਚਿੱਟਾ ਲਹੂ (White Blood), published in 1932: a novel of rural Punjab whose title carries his diagnosis of a society whose lifeblood had lost its red cells, its courage and compassion. The book made his name across Punjab.
Major novels and what they changed
Before Nanak Singh, Punjabi prose meant religious writing and verse; the modern novel of ordinary contemporary life barely existed. He changed that. Across fifty-nine books, including thirty-eight novels, plus short story collections, plays, poems and an autobiography, he wrote about caste, poverty, superstition, religious bigotry and the place of women, always from the side of ordinary people. The Tribune's much quoted verdict, carried in his biographies, calls his greatest contribution the secularisation of Punjabi fiction, and notes his principle that character determines incident and incident illustrates character.
His best known novel, Pavitra Papi (Saintly Sinner), appeared in 1945. It was translated into Hindi and other Indian languages, and into English by his grandson Navdeep Suri under the title The Watchmaker. His admirer Balraj Sahni adapted it into a successful Hindi film. (One Sheath, Two Swords), his great historical novel of 1959, brought the highest honours. He also wrote the dialogue and screenplay for Dara Singh's Punjabi film Nanak Dukhiya Sub Sansar.
His books travelled. Chitta Lahu was translated into English as White Blood, and into Russian by Natasha Tolstoy, granddaughter of Leo Tolstoy, who visited Nanak Singh in Amritsar to present him with the first copy. Few Punjabi writers of his generation reached readers in so many languages.
Honours and later life
In 1960 he received Punjab's highest literary award. In 1962 he won the Sahitya Akademi Award, India's highest literary honour, for Ik Mian Do Talwaran. For thirty to forty years, by the Tribune's estimate quoted in his biographies, he was the best selling novelist in India, a reach achieved without English, without a university, and largely from Amritsar, the city where he had survived 1919 and where he made his home.
Nanak Singh died in Amritsar on 28 December 1971, aged seventy-four. He was married to Raj Kaur, and his children carried the family into public life in India; it is his grandson Navdeep Suri, a former diplomat, who has done most to return his work to print in English.
Legacy: the father of the Punjabi novel
His centenary was celebrated in 1997, and in 1998 the Government of India issued a postage stamp in his honour, released by Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral: a rare tribute for a novelist. The translations have kept coming: Navdeep Suri's English versions include Pavitra Papi as The Watchmaker, Adh Khidya Phul as A Life Incomplete, the recovered Khooni Vaisakhi in 2019, and ਖੂਨ ਦੇ ਸੋਹਿਲੇ as Hymns in Blood in 2022.
The title father of the Punjabi novel is not a courtesy. Nanak Singh showed that Punjabi prose could carry the full weight of modern life: a village, a jail, a massacre, a love story, a nation's freedom struggle. Writers as different as ਭਾਈ ਵੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ, the romantic pioneer who preceded him, and the generations of Punjabi novelists who followed, all work in a landscape he helped to open. His birthplace in ਜੇਹਲਮ district is now in Pakistan, his grave and his readers are in India, and his books belong, as they always did, to one undivided Punjab of the imagination.
