Juggy D: Bhangra Singer, Songs & Biography

Juggy D, born Jagwinder Singh Dhaliwal on 19 November 1981 in Southall, London, is a British Punjabi bhangra singer who helped take Punjabi music into the UK mainstream. He broke through with the Rishi Rich Project in 2003, and his 2004 debut album was the first Punjabi language album in the UK charts.

Where is Juggy D from?

Juggy D is from Southall, in west London, England, where he was born on 19 November 1981 and where he is still based. Southall has one of the largest Punjabi communities in Britain, and its bhangra scene, record shops and wedding circuit formed the world he grew up singing in. He has described his sound as shaped by two influences at once: the Punjabi folk music he heard at home, and the reggae and pop he grew up with in London.

Early life and first recordings

Juggy D has been performing since he was fourteen. Born Jagwinder Singh Dhaliwal, he sang at local events through his teens and has said he has been working professionally in music since 2002. That year he appeared on 'Nahin Jeena', a single with producer Rishi Rich and Bally Sagoo, the first step in the partnership that would define his career.

The producer behind his break was Rishi Rich, a fellow west Londoner building a British Asian sound that fused bhangra with R&B. In 2003 Rich brought Juggy D together with singer Jay Sean as the Rishi Rich Project. Juggy D later said the three of them created a genre which shook the music industry, and he has often repeated that Rich gave him his break and that the chemistry between them is one he does not find elsewhere.

Dance With You and the breakthrough

The Project's defining record was 'Dance With You (Nachna Tere Naal)', released in September 2003. Jay Sean sang in his R&B style while Juggy D delivered the Punjabi verses, and the single reached number 12 on the UK Singles Chart, spending seven weeks on the chart in total. It was a landmark for British Asian music: a song with Punjabi singing at its centre, made by three young west Londoners, competing inside the national top 20.

Juggy D has called the song iconic, noting that audiences still ask for it many years later. Its success made the trio the public face of the urban desi sound, and showed record companies that bhangra and Punjabi vocals could sell far beyond a niche market.

Juggy D (2004): the first Punjabi album in the UK charts

His debut solo album, Juggy D, was released on 12 October 2004 on 2Point9 Records, produced by Rishi Rich with Mentor. It peaked at number 70 on the UK Albums Chart and made history as the first Punjabi language album ever to enter the UK official charts. No artist singing a full album in Punjabi had reached the national album chart before.

The album's lead single, 'Sohniye', released that August, became his signature song, a wedding and party staple across the Punjabi diaspora, and a version of it was used in the 2004 Bollywood film Shukriya: Till Death Do Us Apart. The album also included 'Billo', 'Meri Jaan' with Jay Sean, and 'Akheer', a song Juggy D has described as carrying a message for anyone who feels low and thinks their life is over: do not give up.

Bollywood, crossovers and Bhangraton

Bollywood opened to him quickly. With Veronica Mehta and Rishi Rich he sang 'U 'n' I' in Hum Tum (2004) and 'Balle Balle' in Bride and Prejudice (2004), and he appeared with Jay Sean and Mehta in Kyaa Kool Hai Hum (2005), singing on 'Dil Mera (One Night)'. He returned to a major Hindi soundtrack in 2017, sharing the title song of Mubarakan with Yash Narvekar, Badshah and Sukriti Kakar.

In Britain he became a familiar voice on other artists' records. His vocals featured on the Rishi Rich Desi Kulcha remixes of Craig David's 'Rise and Fall' and 'Spanish', Britney Spears and Madonna's 'Me Against the Music', Mary J. Blige's 'Love @ 1st Sight' and Ricky Martin's 'I Don't Care'. His own singles kept experimenting: 'Khol Aaja (Come Closer)' (2007) with Chinese American rapper Jin, and 'Oh Jaan Meri Yah' (2007) with British bhangra group DCS. He was also among the first artists to experiment with Bhangraton, blending bhangra with reggaeton rhythms, and in 2006 he won Best Act at the UK Asian Music Awards. The same period brought a small film role, a cameo appearance in the British film Cash and Curry.

Later work and legacy

His second album, Juggy D 2: Punjabi Rockstar, followed at the start of the 2010s: its title track reached number 17 on the Official Asian Music Chart in December 2010, and a third collection, Juggy D 2: Punjabi Rockstar 2, arrived in 2018. In between, the original trio reunited: 'Freak' (2015) brought Juggy D, Jay Sean and Rishi Rich back into the studio together, twelve years after their breakthrough single.

He has since favoured singles over albums, arguing that listeners rarely hear album tracks that have no video. Later singles include 'Get Down' (2018), again with Rishi Rich and rapper Ikka, and 'UB1' (2022). In 2019, 'Dance', recorded with F1rstman, H-Dhami, Mumzy and Raxstar, won Best Collaboration at the Brit Asia TV Music Awards. He continues to record and perform, and has said he might one day record a devotional song because his mother would like him to. More than twenty years after 'Dance With You', his legacy rests on two things: proof that a Punjabi language album could enter the UK national charts, and a voice that still fills dancefloors from Southall to Toronto.
