Lehmber Hussainpuri (born 17 July 1977) is an Indian bhangra singer from Hussainpur village in Punjab, whose folk voice carried two of the defining Punjabi dance songs of the 2000s: Das Ja, later voted among the greatest UK bhangra songs of all time, and Sadi Gali, which Bollywood took nationwide in 2011.

Early life and the Hussainpur name

Profiles of the singer agree on the outline and disagree on one detail. He was born on 17 July 1977, and he takes the second half of his stage name from his home village, Hussainpur, in the Doaba belt of Punjab. One detailed profile places that village in Jalandhar district and notes that it lies about 12.4 kilometres from Deol Nagar in Jalandhar city, where he later settled. Other listings instead give Kapurthala, also in Doaba, as his birth district. No public profile consulted for this entry cites a birth record, so the village is named here as the sources agree, and the district is left open rather than guessed.

That caution matters because Punjab has several villages called Hussainpur, in Jalandhar, Kapurthala and other districts, and a wrong pin on the map would create a false fact out of a famous name. What is not in doubt is the shape of the life that followed: a village singer from Doaba whose voice was formed in Punjabi folk singing, and who reached his first wide audience not through a solo album of his own but through the studios of other producers.

Breakthrough with Mukhtar Sahota and Dr Zeus

He first came to the attention of bhangra listeners through producer Mukhtar Sahota, on a track called Sohni Lagdi. One profile of those years also notes that he was introduced by Music Pearls of Ludhiana, and that listeners compared his voice with that of Kaka Bhaniawala, another folk rooted singer of the period. The comparison is a useful clue to his sound: a full, earthy folk delivery that producers could set against modern beats without sanding it down.

His first big success came with UK producer Dr Zeus, on the album Unda The Influence. The record worked with both traditional Punjabi listeners and modern bhangra fans, and tracks such as Ah Ni Kuriye and Mele Vich Jatt became best sellers. His voice then carried further on DesiRock by the band Swami, an international hit that introduced him to bhangra audiences well beyond Punjab and Britain. The partnership with Dr Zeus later broke down over an album, and after leaving his first label he was signed by Serious Records. His first album for them arrived in the summer of 2006, with production by Jeeti, Kam Frantic and Aman Hayer: the record the discographies list as Chalakiyan, with Folk Attack, produced by Dr Zeus, dated to 2005.

What is Lehmber Hussainpuri best known for?

Lehmber Hussainpuri is best known for Das Ja and Sadi Gali, two songs that have outlived the albums and the decade that produced them. Das Ja, his dance floor classic with DJ Sanj, received a rare formal honour in April 2014, when BBC Asian Network ran its Bhangra Britain season to find the greatest bhangra anthem. A panel of experts shortlisted 50 songs from the 1970s onwards, covering four decades of British bhangra, and placed Das Ja third among the best UK bhangra songs of all time.

Sadi Gali did the same work in a different arena. Reviewing the Tanu Weds Manu soundtrack in 2011, Bollywood Hungama called it a Punjabi track different from routine bhangra numbers, a fun celebration song with a quintessential desi Punjabi flavour that hooks a listener the first time it is heard. Between the British honour and the Bollywood hit, his reputation rests on a simple point: when a wedding or a bhangra night needs one voice that sounds like Punjab itself, his is one of the voices DJs still reach for.

Sadi Gali and the film years

Sadi Gali was not new when Bollywood found it. A February 2011 Hungama media brief, issued as the Tanu Weds Manu music launched, described the track as already six years old, recreated by RDB and sung in pure, unadulterated Punjabi by Hussainpuri, and predicted it would become an anthem at parties, weddings and discotheques. The film, starring R. Madhavan and Kangana Ranaut, carried the song across India, and it remains the recording by which most Hindi film listeners know him.

More film work followed in the same year, including Mallo Malli with Hard Kaur on the soundtrack of Mausam, with music by Pritam. In an interview of that period he counted six songs with Pritam, a few more with other Bollywood producers, and 21 songs in all for the Punjabi film industry, a market he said he was working to expand. The film discographies bear out a busy run: soundtrack songs through the 2010s in Punjabi films alongside the Hindi work, from Yaar Annmulle and Sirphire to RSVP and Heer and Hero.

Folk Attack 2 and the long second run

His own albums paused even as the guest appearances continued. Between 2008 and 2010, songs such as Mera Mahi Tu Pateya, on Jeeti's Serious Duets alongside Miss Pooja, Gulaab on DJ H's Reloaded, and Dil Lagee on Dhol Beat International's Absolut Bhangra 4 kept charting. In April 2010 it was announced that MovieBox Records had acquired his label, Serious Records. Speaking after a break from the limelight, he promised a solo album and a devotional album, and said he was trying qawwalis and songs on social causes, a change from his usual fast party tunes.

The solo return came on 21 October 2011, when Folk Attack 2 was released on Serious Records, five years after Chalakiyan. Its producers were his regular collaborators Jeeti and Kam Frantic, with Bhinda Aujla, Sukhi Chand and Panjabi By Nature, and its singles were Jatt Pagal Karte and Pulli Phirdi. Earlier that year Matha Tekhiya, on Bups Saggu's debut album Redefined, had already returned him to the UK dance floor. In the summer of 2014 Make It Clap, with Jags Klimax, topped charts, and Das Ja 2 followed, twelve years after the original, on DJ Sanj's album Hype, this time produced by DNA. Singles have continued since, among them Phone Mera in 2017, Manke 2 in 2020, Sadi Gali 2.0 with Shipra Goyal in 2023, and Boliyan Non-Stop in 2024.

Devotional albums and legacy

Running beside the party records is a devotional catalogue that his wedding audience sometimes forgets. The discographies list religious albums across his career, among them Chal Chaliye Maiya De, Ho Rahi E Jee Teri Jai Jai Kaar, Dhan Dhan Guru Ravidass in 2014 and Prabhu Valmiki Ji in 2018. The devotional album he promised in his 2010 interview was therefore no side project invented for publicity: singing for faith gatherings was part of his working life from early on, and his later singles have returned often to Ravidass and Valmiki themes.

His legacy in bhangra is that of a bridge. His singing stayed close to the folk boliyan and village celebration styles of Doaba, while the records around that voice were made by the defining UK producers of the 2000s, Dr Zeus, Aman Hayer, Jeeti and Kam Frantic among them. That is why his best songs travel so well: they sound traditional in the voice and modern in the track. Two decades after Unda The Influence, Das Ja and Sadi Gali are still the first songs many listeners name when they talk about him, and both are still working songs, played wherever Punjabis gather to dance.
