Maninder Sidhu (born 1984) is a Canadian politician and businessman who has been Canada's Minister of International Trade since 13 May 2025 and the Liberal member of Parliament for Brampton East since 2019. A Sikh of Punjab origin who has lived in Brampton, Ontario, for more than 30 years, he built a customs brokerage business and founded a charity before entering Parliament, spent over four years as a parliamentary secretary at Global Affairs Canada, and in October 2026 led the largest trade delegation Canada has sent to India in 30 years.

Sidhu's official biography says he has lived in Brampton for the past 30 years and still calls the city home, alongside his wife and children. How did Maninder Sidhu reach the cabinet?

Sidhu was first elected to the House of Commons for Brampton East on 21 October 2019, one of 23 Indo-Canadian MPs elected that year, defeating the sitting MP Raj Grewal. He was re-elected on 20 September 2021 and again on 28 April 2025, giving him three consecutive terms in one of Canada's most competitive suburban ridings.

His rise inside the government was steady and unusually focused on the world-facing departments. He served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Development from 19 March to 15 August 2021, then as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 3 December 2021 to 17 September 2023, and then as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development from 18 September 2023 to 23 March 2025. In total he spent over four years as a parliamentary secretary at Global Affairs Canada. His committee work in the same period included the Standing Committee on International Trade from September 2023, the Subcommittee on International Human Rights, Public Accounts, and, in his first parliament, Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, Natural Resources, Citizenship and Immigration, Environment and Sustainable Development, and the COVID-19 Pandemic committee.

On 13 May 2025, in Prime Minister Mark Carney's government, Sidhu was appointed Minister of International Trade. On 9 October 2026 he announced that he would lead the Team Canada Trade Mission to India, with stops in Mumbai and Bengaluru, describing it as Canada's largest commercial engagement in India in recent years. From 12 to 17 October 2026 he led nearly 300 delegates, the largest trade delegation Canada has sent to India in over 30 years, drawn from the aerospace and space, clean technology and energy transition, information and communication technology, life sciences and agri-food sectors.

The mission closed on 16 October 2026 with 34 commercial agreements worth close to $300 million. In Mumbai he took part in the Canada-India Business Council's annual forum and met Yotta Data Services about investing in an AI innovation hub in Canada. In Bengaluru he joined an aerospace roundtable and visited companies including Air India and Dynamatic Technologies. Ahead of the mission he spoke at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in Delhi on economic and supply chain security. He also met India's Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal in New Delhi and Mumbai: the two ministers had met 10 times since May 2025, advancing negotiations toward a Canada-India Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, with work continuing toward concluding it by the end of 2026. The wider goal the mission served is shared by both governments: doubling two-way trade with India to $70 billion a year by 2030, from $30.4 billion in goods and services in 2025.

Why Maninder Sidhu matters

Sidhu's career joins two stories that are often told separately. The first is Brampton's: a city built in large part by Punjabi immigrant families, whose children now represent it in Ottawa. The second is Canada's trade story in 2025 and 2026, a deliberate turn toward diversifying exports beyond the United States, in which India is the largest single prize and in which a Brampton MP of Punjab origin, trained in the practical mechanics of moving goods across borders, was given the trade file.
