Taapsee Pannu is an Indian actor from a Punjabi Sikh family in Delhi who moved from software engineering and modelling into films, first in Telugu and Tamil cinema and then in Hindi films. She is best known for Pink, Naam Shabana, Manmarziyaan, Thappad and Dunki, and for leading roles that centre women making difficult choices.

Early life in Delhi

Taapsee Pannu was born on 1 August 1987 in New Delhi. She was born in Delhi, to a Punjabi Sikh family, and the page states that plainly because her birthplace is Delhi and not Punjab. Her father, Dilmohan Singh Pannu, is a retired real estate agent, and her mother, Nirmaljeet Kaur Pannu, is a homemaker. She has a younger sister, Shagun Pannu.

She was schooled at Mata Jai Kaur Public School in Ashok Vihar, Delhi. Forbes India describes an academically inclined Delhi childhood filled with sports, public speaking and dance, including Kathak lessons for eight years. That mix of study and stage stayed with her: she performed from a young age, yet she first followed a conventional professional path rather than going straight into films.

From software engineering to films in the South

Pannu studied Computer Science and Engineering in Delhi, at the Guru Tegh Bahadur Institute of Technology, affiliated with Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University. After graduating she worked as a software engineer. Forbes India notes that she let go of a lucrative Infosys job offer to sign a film in Telugu, a language that was unfamiliar to her at the time.

Modelling came between engineering and acting. She was selected for the Channel V talent show Get Gorgeous in 2008 and became a full time model, winning the Pantaloons Femina Miss Fresh Face and Safi Femina Miss Beautiful Skin titles at the 2008 Femina Miss India contest. She later said modelling alone would not give her the recognition she wanted, so she moved towards films.

Her acting debut was the Telugu film Jhummandi Naadam in 2010. Her Tamil debut followed in Aadukalam (2011), opposite Dhanush, a film set around cockfights in Madurai that won six National Film Awards. She worked steadily in Telugu and Tamil films in those early years, and also appeared in Malayalam cinema, before Hindi films opened a second phase of her career. Her Hindi debut was David Dhawan's comedy Chashme Baddoor in 2013.

How did Pink change her career?

Pink changed her career because it gave her a central, serious role in a Hindi film that audiences and critics took seriously, after a supporting turn as undercover agent Shabana Khan in Baby (2015). In Pink (2016), she played one of three young women who fight a court case after an incident of molestation, alongside Amitabh Bachchan. The film was a critical and commercial success, and she has described it as a turning point.

The role that began in Baby was then expanded into its own film, Naam Shabana (2017), for which she trained in mixed martial arts forms including Kudo and Krav Maga. From that point she was no longer only a supporting presence in other people's stories. She was carrying films herself, a shift that shaped almost every choice she made afterwards.

Manmarziyaan and her Punjab role

For Punjabi audiences, her most direct Punjab role is Rumi in Manmarziyaan (2018), directed by Anurag Kashyap. The story is set in Amritsar, and Koimoi's review notes that setting directly, while Filmfare highlights her chemistry with Vicky Kaushal and her more mature scenes with Abhishek Bachchan. Rumi is a free spirited young woman caught between the man she loves and the man she marries, and Pannu plays her without asking the audience to excuse or condemn her.

The Punjab connection in her work is a role, not a birthplace claim. She also appeared in Soorma (2018), the sports drama based on the life of hockey player Sandeep Singh, played by Diljit Dosanjh, and much later she played Manu in Dunki (2023), a Punjabi woman who wants to travel to England. Together those films link a Delhi born actor of Punjabi family background to Punjab on screen in three very different ways: a love story in Amritsar, a hockey biography, and a migration drama.

Leading roles, Thappad and Dunki

Between 2018 and 2020 she built a run of leading roles that critics returned to again and again. She played a lawyer in Mulk (2018), a businesswoman accused of murder in the thriller Badla (2019), and one of the oldest sharpshooters in the world, Prakashi Tomar, in Saand Ki Aankh (2019), a role that required three months of pistol shooting training.

In Thappad (2020), directed by Anubhav Sinha, she played Amrita, a homemaker who seeks a divorce after her husband slaps her at a party. The film treats that single slap as a question about respect inside a marriage, and her quiet performance drives it. Filmfare lists Thappad among her best performances, and the role brought her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress.

Her later work moved between cinemas and streaming. Haseen Dillruba (2021) became the most watched Hindi film on its streaming platform that year, according to the account of her career, even though critics were divided about it. In Rashmi Rocket (2021) she played a track athlete subjected to gender testing, and in Looop Lapeta (2022) she led a time loop thriller. Dunki (2023), directed by Rajkumar Hirani and led by Shah Rukh Khan, became her highest grossing release, and she returned in Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba in 2024.

Honours and legacy

Her honours reflect the two sides of that career, popular and critical. She has received two Filmfare Awards and a Filmfare OTT Award: the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress for Saand Ki Aankh, shared with Bhumi Pednekar, the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for Thappad, and the Filmfare OTT Award for Best Actress in a Web Original Film for Looop Lapeta. Pink also brought her the IIFA Woman of the Year award.

Outside acting, she co owns the event management company The Wedding Factory and the badminton franchise Pune 7 Aces, which competes in the Premier Badminton League. Her legacy so far is not a single hit. It is a working method: an outsider with no film family, trained as an engineer, who learned Telugu and Tamil industries first, then used Pink to move into Hindi films where the woman at the centre of the story is the reason the film exists.
