Where is Khurd?

Khurd is a village of Malerkotla tehsil in Malerkotla district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Malerkotla, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Malerkotla-II community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039433, and it covers 864 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 3,077 people in Khurd: 1,619 men and 1,458 women, living in 596 households, an average of about 5.2 people per household. Spread over its 864 hectares, the population density works out to about 356 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 901 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 313, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 678 people, about 22 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 71.09 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 78.08 per cent and women at 63.43 per cent. The census recorded 874 workers, about 28 per cent of the village. Of the 864 main workers, the largest group, 431, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 277 cultivators on their own land and 147 agricultural labourers. A further 10 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (810 hectares). About 33 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 5 hours a day. With 280 cultivators and 147 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
