Sangrur district is a district in the Malwa region of Punjab, India, with its headquarters at Sangrur city. Once the seat of the princely state of Jind, it is a flat, canal watered farming district of historic towns, among them Sunam, the birthplace of Shaheed Udham Singh. The 2011 census counted 1,655,169 people in the district as it then stood, before Malerkotla was separated in 2021.

Where is Sangrur district?

Sangrur district is in southern Punjab, in the heart of Malwa, on the level alluvial plain of the Punjab plains. Its neighbours are Malerkotla district to the north, Barnala to the west, Patiala to the east, Mansa to the south west, and the Haryana districts of Fatehabad and Jind to the south. The district belongs to the Patiala Division, and Sangrur city, its headquarters, stands at about 30.25 degrees north and 75.84 degrees east.

The district takes its name from the headquarters town. The district administration's history says the town is said to have been founded by one Sanghu, a Jat, about four hundred years ago, and named after him. That origin is tradition rather than record, but the name has stayed with the town as village, royal capital and now district headquarters. Sangrur city counted 88,043 people in 2011.

History: capital of Jind state

Settlement here is far older than the district. Excavations at Rohira have uncovered a mound about ten metres high with settlement layers dated to around 2300 BC, in the pre-Harappan period, and pottery linked to the Harappan and Kushan periods has been found at sites such as Mard Khera.

In the princely era the land that now forms the district was divided mainly among the Phulkian states. Most of it belonged to Patiala state, including Sunam, Dhuri, Dirba, Moonak, Longowal and Bhawanigarh, while Sangrur town, Badrukhan and 43 nearby villages belonged to Jind state, and some areas belonged to Nabha. Sangrur town itself was part of Nabha before 1773, then passed to Jind after a quarrel between the two states. In 1827 Raja Sangat Singh chose Sangrur as his capital, and later Jind rulers laid out its bazaars, gardens and four gates.

The modern district dates from 1948, when princely rule ended and Sangrur was created from territories of the Nabha, Jind and Patiala states as part of PEPSU, the Patiala and East Punjab States Union. It changed shape repeatedly afterwards. Barnala district was merged into it in 1953, PEPSU merged into Punjab in 1956, and in 1966 the Jind and Narwana tehsils went to the new state of Haryana. Barnala was separated again in 2006. The latest change came on 14 May 2021, when Malerkotla was declared Punjab's 23rd district, carved out of Sangrur with the Malerkotla and Ahmedgarh subdivisions and the Amargarh sub-tehsil. Today's Sangrur is therefore noticeably smaller than the district the 2011 census counted.

Geography and people

The district is almost entirely flat alluvial plain, and its life is organised around water: canals and tubewells watering field after field of wheat and paddy. The official district account describes a dry climate with a hot summer, a short monsoon and a cold winter, and gives average annual rainfall at about 590 millimetres, most of it falling between July and September.

Read the census figures with the 2021 split in mind. The 2011 census counted the old, undivided district: 1,655,169 people over 3,685 square kilometres, a density of 449 people per square kilometre, a literacy rate of 67.99 per cent and a sex ratio of 885 women for every 1,000 men, with growth of 12.3 per cent over the decade from 2001. In that old district, Sikhs formed about 65 per cent of the population, Hindus about 24 per cent and Muslims about 11 per cent, the Muslim share centred on Malerkotla. Punjabi, in its Malwai form, is the district's language, spoken at home, in the mandis and in its gurdwaras, temples and mosques.

For the district within its present boundaries, City Population recomputes the same 2011 census at 1,225,415 people. That is not a new count: it is the 2011 record rearranged to fit the post-2021 map. No newer official population figure for the present district exists.

Towns of the district

The district is administered in seven subdivisions: Sangrur, Sunam, Dhuri, Bhawanigarh, Dirba, Lehragaga and Moonak. Sangrur city, the headquarters, remains the administrative and market centre, with the district courts, the main bazaars and the old royal quarter around Banasar Bagh. Sunam, south of the headquarters and today also called Sunam Udham Singh Wala after its most famous son, is one of the district's oldest towns and a subdivision in its own right.

Dhuri, north of Sangrur city, is the district's railway junction and one of its industrial towns. Bhawanigarh lies east of the headquarters on the Patiala road, Dirba serves the farming belt beyond it, and Longowal is known across Punjab for the Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology. In the far south, Lehragaga and Moonak serve the Ghaggar side of the district: Moonak sits on the bank of the Ghaggar river, close to the Haryana border, and Khanauri and Cheema round out the towns that anchor local trade.

Places of interest

Banasar Bagh in Sangrur city is the district's best known sight. At its centre stands a marble Baradari, a pavilion with twelve doors, set in the middle of a pond and reached by a small bridge through a marble gate, with four towers, walkways, planting and a mini zoo around it. The rulers of Jind state used the garden buildings as a summer retreat. Beside the garden, the old Diwan Khana, where the Jind court sat, is now the Jind State Memorial Museum, displaying weapons and other articles of the princely period.

The royal layer of the city runs deeper. Outside the Nabha Gate stands the Shahi Samadhan, the tomb complex of the Jind rulers, among them Maharaja Gajpat Singh, the maternal grandfather of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The heritage Clock Tower rises near the courts complex, and the old city still reads by its four gates: the Sunami Gate, Patiala Gate, Dhuri Gate and Nabha Gate, each named for the town the road leads to. About five kilometres from the Nabha Gate, Gurdwara Nankiana Sahib is associated in local tradition with visits by Guru Nanak and Guru Hargobind.

At Sunam, the ancestral house of Shaheed Udham Singh has been converted into a museum, with letters and objects connected to him on display, and his memorial draws visitors through the year. Udham Singh was born at Sunam in 1899 and was hanged in London on 31 July 1940 after shooting Michael O'Dwyer, the former lieutenant governor of Punjab, that March, an act he linked to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919. For many visitors, that story is their reason for coming to the district.

Economy and farming

Farming is the district's economy first, and everything else arranges itself around the crop calendar. Wheat and paddy dominate the canal irrigated plain, with cotton, groundnut and bajra in the drier southern belt around Lehragaga, and the mandi towns exist to grade, weigh, store and move that grain.

Industry is mostly small scale and tied to the farm economy. A district count for 2009 to 2010 recorded 10,695 registered industrial units, of which 23 were large or medium units, with small scale industries employing 53,259 workers. Dhuri shows the pattern best: a cooperative sugar mill, workshops making agricultural implements, and a name for steel furniture. Sangrur city adds services and health care for the whole region, including the PGIMER Satellite Centre and the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital.

Getting there and today

Sangrur sits on the Ludhiana to Jakhal railway line, with direct rail links to Ludhiana and to Jakhal in Haryana. Dhuri is the bigger rail point, a junction where that line meets the Bathinda to Rajpura line. By road, the official district guide puts Sangrur city 56 kilometres from Patiala and 112 kilometres from Bathinda, with buses tying every subdivision town to the headquarters through the day.

Today's Sangrur is a mid sized Malwa district with an outsized past: a former royal capital, the home district of Udham Singh, and a farming heartland whose towns grew up around grain. The 2021 separation of Malerkotla made it smaller, but its structure did not change: Sangrur city at the centre, Sunam and Dhuri as its other poles, and hundreds of villages in between.
