Where is Batuha?

Batuha is a village in Dhuri tehsil of Sangrur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Dhuri, about 16 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dhuri community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 039607, and it covers 339 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,072 people in Batuha: 572 men and 500 women, living in 229 households, an average of about 4.7 people per household. Spread over its 339 hectares, the population density works out to about 316 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 874 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 106, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 239 people, about 22 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 68.32 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 73.22 per cent and women at 62.64 per cent. The census recorded 438 workers, about 41 per cent of the village. Of the 298 main workers, the largest group, 148, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 116 other workers in trade, transport and services and 32 agricultural labourers. A further 140 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (85 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (223 hectares). About 31 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. The directory recorded Dhuri, about 16 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was more than ten kilometres away. Dhuri, the tehsil headquarters, and Sangrur, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Balian, Natt, Qila Hakiman and Kanjli.
