Where is Bari Hari Urf Harike Kalan?
Bari Hari Urf Harike Kalan is a large village in Muktsar tehsil of ਸ੍ਰੀ ਮੁਕਤਸਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ district, Punjab, in the Malwa region. It is called Hari Ke Kalan in its own village article and school records, and its gram panchayat is named simply Harike Kalan. In the census record it carries village code 035459, and that code matters, because this village is not the Harike of Tarn Taran district. The Tarn Taran ਹਰੀਕੇ is the village of the barrage and the ਹਰੀਕੇ ਝੀਲ at the Sutlej and Beas confluence, far to the north east. This Harike Kalan is a Malwa canal farming village with no barrage and no wetland, and the two places share nothing but a similar name. The census recorded Bariwala, about 7 kilometres away, as its nearest town, and ਸ੍ਰੀ ਮੁਕਤਸਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ, the tehsil and district headquarters, stands about 22 kilometres away. The village covers 2,854 hectares at about 30.48 degrees north and 74.70 degrees east, and has PIN code 152025. It is the second largest village in Muktsar tehsil after ਰੁਪਨਾ, and the eighth largest in the district. For political representation it sits in the Gidderbaha assembly constituency and the Faridkot Lok Sabha constituency. Villages closest to it include ਖੋਖਰ about 2.5 kilometres away, ਸਰਾਏ ਨਗਾ about 5 kilometres away and Samagh.
People and work
The 2011 census counted 8,024 people in Bari Hari Urf Harike Kalan: 4,212 men and 3,812 women living in 1,454 households, about 5.5 people to a household. Spread over 2,854 hectares, the density works out to about 281 people per square kilometre. The village had grown from 7,223 people in 2001, a rise of about 11 per cent over the decade. The sex ratio was 905 women for every 1,000 men, above the Punjab average of 895. Children up to the age of six numbered 871, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 3,497 people, about 44 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.
Literacy in 2011 stood at 57.85 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 62.42 per cent and women at 52.83 per cent. The census recorded 2,954 workers, about 37 per cent of the village. Of the 2,601 main workers, the largest group, 1,047 people, were cultivators on their own land, closely followed by 1,012 agricultural labourers and 503 other workers in trade, transport and services, with household industry workers making up the rest. A further 353 people were marginal workers. Counting everyone, the village held 1,063 cultivators against 1,218 agricultural labourers, so paid farm work supports more families here than landholding alone, the classic pattern of the Muktsar canal belt.
Land and farming
Farming covers nearly all of this village's land, and it runs entirely on canal water. Of the village's 2,854 hectares, 2,531 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated from canals, with no tube-well irrigation recorded at all. About 274 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the settlement, roads and ponds, and about 49 hectares were barren or uncultivable. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day, against 12 hours for domestic use. In a district where tube-wells do much of the work, a village of this size watered wholly by canals is a marker of its place on the Muktsar canal network.
ਸਿੱਖ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਜੀਵਨ
The village's named place of worship in directory listings is Gurdwara Sahib Baba Langar Singh Ji at Hari Ke Kalan, listed among the gurdwaras of the Muktsar area with strong local ratings, and local addresses also run along a Gurudwara Manji Sahib road, pointing to a second gurdwara in the settlement. No nationally known shrine stands in the village, and no temple or mosque of the village could be verified by name from opened sources, so none is named here. Its religious life is the ordinary, central life of a Malwa Sikh farming village, carried by its own gurdwaras.
Schools
Education in the village runs through one government school at every level from primary to senior secondary, so children can study in the village up to Class 12, with private pre-primary, primary and middle schools alongside. The senior secondary school is the village's oldest institution: school listings date the Government Senior Secondary School at Hari Ke Kalan to 1937, teaching classes 6 to 12 under the Punjab School Education Board from its site at Dhani Tibbaian Wali, though one school record gives 1942, a variance recorded here as it stands. The government primary school, GPS Hari Ke Kalan Main, is dated 1957, a branch primary school was added in 2006, and Godwin Modern School, a private school teaching classes 1 to 8, is dated 1981. The schools sit in the Gidderbaha education blocks and the Assa Buttar cluster, even though the census counts the village in Muktsar block. For degree study, listings place the nearest colleges at Muktsar.
Health and daily services
Health facilities recorded inside the village in 2011 were a single primary health centre: no community health centre, primary health sub-centre, allopathic hospital or dispensary was recorded that year, and no veterinary hospital either, so the Tier 1 record of one health centre for people and none for animals stands exactly as the fresh Village Directory record gives it. Treated tap water was available in the village, though neither total sanitation campaign coverage nor a community toilet complex was recorded. The village had no post office of its own in 2011, the nearest being 5 to 10 kilometres away, and its sub post office was within 5 kilometres. The internet common service centre was more than 10 kilometres away, and the ASHA worker was recorded 5 to 10 kilometres away, though an anganwadi centre stood in the village. It had a PDS ration shop and mobile phone coverage, but no bank branch or ATM in the 2011 record, the nearest banks being 5 to 10 kilometres away: 14 of the census directory's 32 facility fields were positive.
Getting there
The 2011 directory recorded a private bus service in the village itself, while the public bus service was 5 to 10 kilometres away, so the earlier description of private buses only stands correct here. The village is reached by a pucca road, while the all-weather road was recorded 5 to 10 kilometres away, as the written record stands. The nearest railway station was recorded 5 to 10 kilometres away, and listings name Bariwala station, about 7 kilometres away. Bariwala town serves daily needs, and Sri Muktsar Sahib, about 22 kilometres away, is the hub for administration and onward travel.
