Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji (1621 to 1675) was the ninth Sikh Guru, remembered as Hind di Chadar, the Shield of India. In 1675 he gave his life in Delhi defending the right of others to practise their own faith, a sacrifice that made the protection of human rights central to Sikh identity and led directly to the founding of the Khalsa. Yet the martyr of 1675 had spent most of his life as the quietest of the Gurus: a swordsman turned hermit, who meditated for some twenty years in an underground cell at Bakala before the Guruship found him.

He was born Tyag Mal on 1 April 1621 in Amritsar, the youngest son of ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਜੀ and Mata Nanaki. Raised in Sikh culture, he studied the old classics under Bhai Gurdas and learned horsemanship, archery and swordsmanship. As a young man he fought beside his father in the Battle of Kartarpur (1635), where his valour earned him the name Tegh Bahadur, brave bearer of the sword. He married Mata Gujri in 1632, and after Guru Hargobind Ji's death in 1644 the couple settled in Bakala, his mother's village, where Tegh Bahadur Ji withdrew into a life of quiet meditation that lasted, by most accounts, some twenty years. He sought nothing, built nothing and claimed nothing, and that long silence is essential to his story: when the call finally came, it came to a man who had never asked for it.

Becoming the Ninth Guru

ਕਦੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨ ਜੀ died of smallpox in Delhi in 1664, his last words, Baba Bakale, sent seekers to the village of Bakala, where twenty-two men set themselves up as the next Guru. Sikh tradition tells how the merchant Makhan Shah Labana, who had vowed 500 gold coins to the true Guru if his sinking ship were saved, tested each claimant with an offering of only two coins; each accepted them contentedly, until he reached the quiet man in the cell, who asked after the full vow. Makhan Shah climbed to a rooftop shouting Guru ladho re, I have found the Guru. In August 1664 a Sikh congregation formally installed him as the ninth Guru, though the rival claimants, backed at times by Delhi, made his first years difficult, and he chose to make his seat away from Amritsar, in the foothills.

Journeys and Anandpur Sahib

In 1665 Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji bought land in the Shivalik foothills from Rani Champa of Bilaspur for 500 rupees and founded a new town, first called Chakk Nanaki after his mother, which grew into ਅਨੰਦਪੁਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ, the City of Bliss. From this base he travelled widely across the subcontinent: Mathura, Agra, Allahabad, Varanasi, and on into Bengal and Assam, preaching the teachings of Guru Nanak, digging wells and founding langars for the poor. In Assam he is remembered at Dhubri for brokering peace between the Mughal general Raja Ram Singh and the Ahom king, sparing the region a war. His son Gobind Rai, the future Guru Gobind Singh Ji, was born in Patna in 1666 while the Guru was in the east, and the family rejoined him there before returning to the hills. These eastern journeys carried Sikh congregations as far as Dhaka and Assam, and sangats founded then survive to this day.

The hymns

A poet and scholar, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji composed 116 hymns in 15 ragas, which his son Guru Gobind Singh Ji included in the Guru Granth Sahib (pages 219 to 1427). They dwell on detachment from worldly attachments, the nature of the mind and body, sorrow and dignity, death and deliverance. His saloks, the Salok Mahalla 9, stand at the close of the scripture and are read at the bhog, the ceremonial completion of a full reading of the Guru Granth Sahib, so that his voice is the last a congregation hears before the book is closed. The hymns of the quiet man of Bakala have a gravity all their own: written by someone who had renounced the world, they warn against clinging to it, and they were sung by his son's generation into battle.

Martyrdom

In 1675 a delegation of Kashmiri Pandits, led by Pandit Kirpa Ram, came to Anandpur Sahib pleading for help against forced conversion under Aurangzeb's officials. Sikh tradition tells that the Guru, deep in thought, was asked by his nine-year-old son Gobind Rai who could answer such tyranny, and the boy replied that no one was worthier than his father. The Guru resolved to confront the emperor. Travelling towards Delhi, he was arrested near Ropar with his companions and imprisoned, first at Sirhind and then in Delhi. In November 1675 he was ordered to perform a miracle or convert to Islam; he refused both. Three of his companions were tortured to death before his eyes: Bhai Mati Das was sawn in two, Bhai Dayal Das was thrown into a cauldron of boiling water, and Bhai Sati Das was wrapped in cotton and burned alive. On 11 November 1675 Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji was publicly beheaded in Chandni Chowk, Delhi, on Aurangzeb's orders.

Legacy and memorials

ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਸੀਸ ਗੰਜ ਸਾਹਿਬ in Chandni Chowk marks the spot of the beheading. A Sikh, Bhai Jaita, carried the Guru's head through the night to Anandpur Sahib in defiance of the Mughals, while the devoted Lakhi Shah Vanjara took the body to his own house and set the house alight to cremate it unseen; Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib marks that spot. His son recalled the sacrifice in the Bachittar Natak: he gave up his head, but did not utter a sigh. The martyrdom hardened Sikh resolve against persecution and set the course for the Khalsa, founded by Guru Gobind Singh Ji in 1699. The classical poet Bulleh Shah honoured him as a ghazi, a warrior of faith, and India observes his Shaheedi Divas every 24 November.

Why is Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji called Hind di Chadar?

Hind di Chadar means Shield of India. The title honours his martyrdom in defence of the Kashmiri Pandits' right to practise their own religion: he died protecting a community not his own, making him a shield for all of India's oppressed. The phrase is credited to his son, Guru Gobind Singh Ji, who wrote of his father that he protected the sacred thread and mark of the Hindus, and performed a great act in this dark age.

When is Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji's martyrdom day observed?

Shaheedi Divas is observed every year on 24 November in India, where it is a public holiday in several states. The Guru was beheaded on 11 November 1675 in the Julian calendar then in use, which corresponds to 24 November in the Gregorian calendar. Gurdwaras mark the day with kirtan and readings of his hymns, and in Delhi large processions move through Chandni Chowk past Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib, where he was martyred.
