Diljit Dosanjh will not be allowed to sing four of his songs at his concert in Indore on 15 November, after the district child protection officer issued a direction barring the tracks over concerns about their lyrics. The order was issued on 6 November to the management of C-21 Mall, where the show is scheduled.

The four songs named in the directive are 'Patiala Peg', '5 Tara Theke', 'Jeb Vichon Labhiya' and 'Jatt Uthe Fire Karda Jitthe Pabandi Hathiyaran Di'. The action follows a complaint by a Chandigarh-based professor, Dr Panditrao Dhrenavar, who said the lyrics could have a negative influence on children attending the concert.

Why the songs were barred

The letter from the District Child Protection Officer, who works under the Women and Child Development Department in Indore, says arrangements must be made to ensure the four songs are not performed. It refers to an order passed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on 22 July 2019. The letter also says children above the age of five will be allowed to attend the event.

The songs at the centre of the row all carry references to alcohol or weapons, themes that have drawn objections at Dosanjh's concerts before. The professor's complaint said young audiences could be influenced by lyrics that glorify drinking and gun culture.

The show will go on

The Indore concert, part of Dosanjh's Aura India Tour, is still scheduled for 15 November at C-21 Mall. Dosanjh has said he will perform in Indore despite the security concerns around the show. Earlier this week, three private schools and the mayor's office in Indore received bomb threat emails, and the singer addressed the threats in a video message, saying the show would go ahead.

The tour began with a show in Delhi on 30 October. Protests by Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad workers were also reported ahead of the Indore date, adding to the scrutiny around the concert.

Not the first time

Dosanjh has faced similar restrictions before. Ahead of his Hyderabad concert in 2024, the Telangana government issued an advisory against songs promoting alcohol, drugs and violence, and certain songs were also restricted before his Chandigarh show. In Ahmedabad, he told the crowd he would not sing songs about alcohol.
