The United Arab Emirates has conferred one of its top civilian honours on Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar and his flydubai crew. UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan awarded the crew the First Class Order of Zayed II for their courage during the in-flight emergency of 30 September, the Dubai Media Office said in a statement reported by NDTV and Gulf Business on Tuesday, 27 October 2026.

Who presented the honour?

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, presented the honours and commended the crew's actions and sense of responsibility. The President also received the crew members in the presence of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The two leaders praised the crew's courage and professionalism in ensuring passenger safety and securing the aircraft, and said protecting people's safety and security remains a top priority for the UAE. The crew thanked the President and said they were proud to receive the honour.

What happened on 30 September?

Flight FZ1073 was flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv on 30 September when the co-pilot attacked Captain Machchhar in the cockpit, seriously injuring him, according to reports of the incident. Despite his injuries, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, allowing cabin crew, off-duty pilots travelling on the flight and passengers to step in and bring the situation under control. The aircraft was diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia and landed safely, with all 172 passengers and crew reported safe.

A month of recognition

The honour caps weeks of international recognition for the Indian captain. Sheikh Hamdan had earlier visited Machchhar in hospital while he was being treated for his injuries and praised his calm and responsibility. Leaders in India, Israel and the United States have also praised his composure, and Israel has decided to confer a civilian bravery award on him once he has recovered, according to reports. Senior UAE officials at Tuesday's reception included Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman and chief executive of Emirates Airline and Group, Gulf Business reported.
