Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday, November 1, transferred Rs 1,291 crore in Sanman Rashi directly into the bank accounts of more than 37.43 lakh women at a function in Abohar, in Fazilka district. Mobile phones of beneficiaries across the state buzzed with SMS alerts as the money landed, in what the Chief Minister called a step toward the economic strength and self-respect of Punjab's mothers and daughters.

The payment was made under the Mukh Mantri Mawan-Dhiyan Satkar Yojna, the state government's cash-assistance scheme for women. Mann said the scheme aims to bring one crore women under its ambit, and that nearly 80 lakh registrations have already been completed. He said the government had earlier disbursed Rs 2,643.71 crore under the scheme, and with Sunday's transfer the total assistance has reached Rs 3,934.80 crore.
