Two men have died and two others are injured after armed men opened fire on members of an extended family sitting outside their homes in the Angadpura area of Moga, in an attack that spread panic through the neighbourhood. The Indian Express reported on Sunday that two people were dead and two injured after multiple gunshots were fired in the city. The dead have been identified as Gagan Jindal, 30, and Sahil Jindal, 40, both from the same family. All four victims were hit and taken to hospital, where Gagan and Sahil died during treatment. Reports said one victim was shot in the head, two in the abdomen and another in the arm.

Attack from a black SUV

According to preliminary reports, five or six members of the extended family were sitting outside their homes in Angadpura when the attackers arrived in a black Scorpio and opened fire before fleeing. Eyewitnesses said at least 15 to 20 rounds were fired, and police recovered three shells from the spot. The shooting was captured in the accounts of local news crews at the scene, where bullet marks were visible on a shop shutter and police teams worked through the night. Investigators are examining CCTV footage from cameras around the spot, and a forensic team was called in to collect evidence.

Five accused identified, police say

Moga Senior Superintendent of Police Sartaj Singh Chahal said a police team reached the spot soon after the firing was reported, secured the scene and began the investigation. In an on-camera briefing shared by Moga Police, the SSP said statements had been taken from the victims' family, five accused persons had been identified and one vehicle had been recovered. He said the family had named some people, and police were recording statements before taking further legal action. City South SHO Varun Kumar said the attack appeared, prima facie, to be a case of personal enmity, and that an FIR was being registered on a family member's statement. Police said an old rivalry between two groups may have led to the shooting, but the motive has not been established and the investigation is continuing.

Law and order questions again

The killing is the latest in a series of shootings in Punjab that have kept law and order at the centre of the state's political debate, and opposition leaders were quick to target the AAP government over this attack as well. It comes on a day when Punjab Police were also publicising the scale of their anti-gang operations, reporting raids at 527 locations on day 277 of the Gangsteran Te Vaar campaign. For residents of Angadpura, the immediate questions are about the injured men's recovery and how quickly the identified accused are arrested. Police have not yet announced any arrests in the case.
