The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday, 24 October, filed a chargesheet against six accused in the 27 April blast on the railway line between Shambhu and Rajpura in Punjab, which killed Khalistani operative Jagroop Singh while he was allegedly assembling explosives, according to the agency's statement carried by ANI, PTI and The Tribune.

Who has been chargesheeted?

The chargesheet was filed before the NIA Special Court in Mohali against Gurjinder Singh alias Beant Baba, Satnam Singh, Pardeep Singh alias Khalsa, Kulvinder Singh alias Bagga, Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi and Manjeet Singh. The charges fall under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Arms Act, the Explosive Substances Act, the Railways Act, the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

What does the NIA allege?

The agency alleges the accused conspired to trigger an explosion on the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India (DFCCIL) line between Shambhu and Rajpura to advance the activities of the banned Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF). The case is registered as RC-28/2026/NIA/DLI. Hindustan Times reported that, according to the agency, the wider network was also involved in raising funds for terror activities and procuring explosives, arms and ammunition. These are allegations in a chargesheet; they are yet to be tested in court.

Why does it matter?

The blast hit a freight corridor line in Patiala district and exposed how an alleged bomb-maker died at the site. The chargesheet is the first major court step in the case, and the NIA has said it is also probing the KZF link further.
