Pakistan has summoned India's chargé d'affaires in Islamabad and lodged a strong protest over the killing of two men by the Border Security Force in the Tarn Taran sector of Punjab's international border, deepening the diplomatic fallout from Friday's firing incident.

In a statement on Saturday, Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said the two men were unarmed Pakistani civilians who had been killed in BSF firing in the Bedian sector along the international border on Friday. It described the use of force as 'unprovoked' and 'wholly unjustified and grossly disproportionate', and demanded an immediate, transparent and credible investigation, disciplinary and legal action against those responsible, and that the findings be formally communicated to Islamabad.

Islamabad 'categorically' rejected any attempt to describe the deceased as infiltrators, according to the statement.

Two sharply different accounts

The two sides have offered starkly conflicting versions of what happened in the early hours of Friday near the Rajoke border outpost in Tarn Taran. According to Indian officials, BSF personnel spotted at least three men moving toward the Indian border from the Pakistani side, challenged and warned them, and opened fire only when two continued advancing. A third man retreated back across the border. The bodies were handed to Punjab Police for post-mortem.

Pakistani sources, cited by state media, claim three residents of Ladhar village moved a few steps beyond a border pillar when BSF personnel opened fire without warning, killing two civilians and wounding another. They say the men were unarmed and had not attempted to cross the border fence.

The conflicting accounts could not immediately be independently reconciled.
