About the book

Ek Chadar Maili Si — ‘A Slightly Soiled Sheet’ — is the only full-length novel Rajinder Singh Bedi ever wrote, and the work on which his literary reputation largely rests. First published in 1962 by Maktaba Jamia in Delhi, it is written in Urdu and runs to barely 150 pages, a compactness that has led some to call it a novella. The novel is set in Kotla, a village in Punjab, and revolves entirely around Rano, the wife of a poor tonga-driver. When it appeared, the critic Sham Lal reviewed it enthusiastically in the Times of India; the review was translated by Khair Nisa Begum and published in the Urdu journal Saugat in 1963. Two years later the book won the Sahitya Akademi Award for Urdu (1965).

Rano’s marriage to Tiloka was agreed on the single condition that he would feed her; her family then left the village. Tiloka is a drunkard who beats his wife and, worse, secretly uses his tonga to ferry lost village girls to the local chaudhary, Meherban Das, selling them for a bottle of liquor and a cutlet. One night he delivers a fourteen-year-old girl of the jatri community to the chaudhary’s men; the next morning the girl’s brother avenges her by killing Tiloka. Rano is widowed, without a parental home to return to, and sinking into destitution.

What follows is the novel’s central turn. Rano’s friend Channo gets the village panchayat to decree that Rano must marry Mangal, Tiloka’s younger brother — a young man about ten years her junior whom she has raised like a son. The ‘wedding’ is no wedding at all: a slightly soiled, somewhat tattered three-yard sheet of cambric — the maili si chadar of the title — is simply placed over Rano’s head. In Punjabi custom this gesture is called chadar daalna, ‘throwing the sheet’: the younger brother takes his elder brother’s widow under his protection, and with it, as his wife. At first Mangal refuses to accept Rano as a wife at all, and a Muslim girl, Salamat, pursues him. Rano, with the shrewdness of a woman who has survived worse, gets him drunk on a bottle Tiloka had hidden and wins him over. Then comes the novel’s cruelest irony: a marriage proposal arrives for Rano’s eldest daughter Waddi — from the very jatri boy who killed Tiloka. Poverty leaves the family no real choice, and the betrothal goes ahead.

Themes

The novel’s power lies in the symbol of its title. The chadar is shelter and security — the transfer of a widow from destitution into a household — but it is maili, soiled. Bedi’s point is that the custom’s protection comes stained: what saves Rano socially also humiliates her, forcing her into a marriage she experiences as unnatural. The sheet stands for every compromise the poor are asked to call dignity.

Rano is one of the most fully realised women in Urdu fiction. Bedi writes her without prudery or pity: she is a desiring, sensual woman and a fiercely protective mother at once, and the novel refuses to choose between those two truths. The marriage to Mangal inverts the mother-son bond into a husband-wife one, and Bedi treats the resulting tangle of shame, tenderness and physical need with unusual honesty — ‘a brutally honest exploration of sexuality, society and relationships’, as one assessment of the book puts it. Time, in Bedi’s telling, is the great healer: what begins in compulsion slowly becomes a genuine, even passionate, union.

Around Rano, Bedi paints a whole village economy of poverty — a mother-in-law’s dowry demands, a daughter nearly auctioned off, twin sons to feed, and a panchayat that disposes of a widow’s life in an afternoon. The realism is unsparing but never merely bleak: folk songs, village gossip, a temple and a mosque, a jogi’s loincloth and fields of sugarcane give Kotla a texture that readers have compared to watching a film. The novel’s theme, as Urdu critics have framed it, is the predicament of poor and backward-class women, and the portrait of people ground down by poverty.

About the author

Rajinder Singh Bedi (1 September 1915 – 11 November 1984) was born in Sialkot and became one of the leading lights of the Progressive Writers’ Movement, counted among the architects of modern Urdu fiction. He began writing in 1932 under the pen name Mohsin Lahori; his story collections Dana-o-Dam, Grahan (1942) and Kokh Jalli (1949) made his name, and stories like ‘Garam Coat’ and ‘Lajwanti’ are considered masterpieces of the Urdu short story.

After Partition he moved to Bombay and became one of Hindi cinema’s most respected writers, penning dialogue and screenplays for more than forty films, including Badi Bahen, Mirza Ghalib, Devdas (1955), Madhumati (1958) — for which he won the Filmfare Best Dialogue award — Anupama (1966), Satyakam (1969) and Abhimaan (1973). He directed Dastak (1970), which won a National Award. Ek Chadar Maili Si was his first and last novel. He received the Padma Shri in 1972 and the Ghalib Award in 1978.

Legacy

The novel’s afterlife has been unusually rich. Khushwant Singh translated it into English as I Take This Woman (Hind Pocket Books, New Delhi, 1967), and it has been staged and translated into several Indian languages. It holds the rare distinction of having been filmed in both India and Pakistan: in Pakistan as Mutthi Bhar Chawal (1978) and in India as Ek Chadar Maili Si (1986), the Hindi film directed by Sukhwant Dhadda and starring Hema Malini as Rano, Rishi Kapoor as Mangal, Poonam Dhillon and Kulbhushan Kharbanda. Bedi himself had wanted to film the story in the 1960s with Geeta Bali and Dharmendra, but the project was shelved after Geeta Bali’s death.

The book endures as Bedi’s definitive statement on custom, desire and survival — and as a work hailed as an outstanding contribution to contemporary Urdu literature for its powerful characterisation and innate humanity. In his memory, the Punjab government instituted the Rajinder Singh Bedi Award for Urdu literature.
