Bobby Deol: from Barsaat and Gupt to Animal

Bobby Deol (born Vijay Singh Deol on 27 January 1969) is an Indian film actor from Mumbai, the younger son of Dharmendra and the younger brother of Sunny Deol. He became a leading man of the 1990s with Barsaat, Gupt and Soldier, went through a long lean period, and rebuilt his career in the 2020s with the streaming series Aashram and the blockbuster Animal, where his wordless villain Abrar Haque became one of the most talked about performances of the year.

A film family, but a Mumbai childhood

Bobby Deol was born in Bombay, now Mumbai, on 27 January 1969, as Vijay Singh Deol. His father Dharmendra had come from Ludhiana district in Punjab, where the family home area lies around Sahnewal, and his elder brother Sunny Deol was born there. Bobby, by contrast, grew up in Bombay, in a household already at the centre of Hindi cinema, and his screen name has always been Bobby rather than Vijay.

He went to school at Mayo College in Ajmer in Rajasthan, and then studied commerce at Mithibai College in Mumbai. A child appearance in Dharam Veer in 1977 came first, but his adult career began almost two decades later, when he was already in his mid twenties and the Deol name carried both an open door and a heavy expectation.

What was Bobby Deol's first film as a hero?

His first film as a hero was Barsaat in 1995, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, in which he starred opposite Twinkle Khanna as a young man from a village who moves to the city and falls in love while running into corrupt police and criminal gangs. The film was a box office success and won him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut, the kind of launch most newcomers only dream of. Overnight, the younger Deol brother was a romantic leading man in his own right, not only Dharmendra's son or Sunny's brother.

The debut set the shape of his early career. He had the looks and screen presence for romance, but the films that made him a star were thrillers, where his quiet, brooding manner worked better than broad comedy or loud action. That turn came quickly, and it carried him through the rest of the decade.

The thriller years: Gupt, Soldier and Humraaz

Gupt: The Hidden Truth in 1997 was the film that confirmed him. Directed by Rajiv Rai and co-starring Manisha Koirala and Kajol, it cast Bobby as a young man accused of murdering his stepfather and sent to prison for a crime he did not commit. The suspense held, the songs travelled, and the film became one of the big commercial successes of the year. It remains the title most often named first when his 1990s run is discussed.

Soldier in 1998, directed by Abbas and Mustan and co-starring Preity Zinta, kept the run going. Bobby played the son of a man convicted of arms smuggling, and the military thriller became another major hit. By the end of the decade he was counted among the popular leading men of Hindi cinema, a position he held into the new century with Badal and Bichhoo in 2000 and Ajnabee in 2001, in which he played a married man caught in a web of deceit.

Humraaz in 2002, again directed by Abbas and Mustan, gave him his most polished romantic thriller role, as a wealthy shipping businessman caught in a love triangle with Ameesha Patel and Akshaye Khanna. The film brought him a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Actor, the highest acting nomination of his early career. It was the peak of his first innings, and it came just before the long slide that followed.

Family films and the lean years

The middle years of Bobby's career are best remembered for the films he made with his family. Apne in 2007, directed by Anil Sharma, cast Dharmendra as a disgraced retired boxer who trains his two sons, played by Sunny and Bobby, to become champions, and the family drama found an audience. Yamla Pagla Deewana in 2011 brought the three together again in a comedy that also did well, and it remains one of the warmest entries in his filmography.

Between and around those family successes, however, most of his films struggled at the box office, and offers slowed down. He has spoken in interviews about growing up sheltered inside a film family, about never learning to chase work through networking, and about making some wrong choices in the films he picked. After a break of about three years from the screen, he tried a comeback with Poster Boys in 2017 alongside Sunny, but that film also failed to revive his fortunes. For a time it looked as if the leading man of Barsaat and Gupt belonged to the past.

How did Aashram and Animal change everything?

The change began with ensemble films and then with streaming. Race 3 in 2018 and Housefull 4 in 2019 put him back in front of large audiences, even in supporting roles, and reminded a new generation of viewers that he was still working. Then came two streaming projects in 2020 that changed how the industry saw him. In the Netflix film Class of '83 he played a police officer, earning a nomination for the Filmfare OTT Award for Best Actor in a Web Original Film. A week later, the Prakash Jha series Aashram arrived on MX Player, with Bobby as Baba Nirala, a godman whose public holiness hides a darker private world.

Aashram was the turning point. The role was a deliberate break from the romantic hero image, and it earned him two nominations for the Filmfare OTT Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series. He has said he took the risk quietly, without telling his parents beforehand, because he was unsure how audiences would react to him as a villain. The response settled the question, and darker roles followed, including Love Hostel in 2022.

Animal in 2023 completed the transformation. Directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga and starring Ranbir Kapoor, the action drama cast Bobby as Abrar Haque, a mute antagonist who speaks no dialogue and carries his menace entirely through presence and expression. The film grossed more than 917 crore rupees worldwide, and his performance, though brief, became its most discussed element, with critics praising how much he conveyed without a single line. It earned him a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor, and he won both the IIFA Award and the Zee Cine Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role. Fans began calling him Lord Bobby, a nickname that stuck.

A second innings still running

Since Animal, Bobby has worked across languages in a way his early career never did. He made his Tamil debut as the antagonist opposite Suriya in Kanguva in 2024, and his Telugu debut in Daaku Maharaaj in 2025. In 2025 he also played a larger than life film superstar, Ajay Talwar, in Aryan Khan's Netflix series The Ba***ds of Bollywood, and starred in Anurag Kashyap's thriller Bandar, which was presented in the Special Presentations section of the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival.

He married Tanya Ahuja in 1996, and the couple have two sons. He has said that his wife's support mattered most during the years when work dried up, and that the second innings feels different from the first: less about being a romantic hero, and more about finding characters with weight, even when they are villains. The boy from a Ludhiana family who grew up in Bombay and became a 1990s heartthrob is now, in his late fifties, one of Hindi cinema's most in demand character actors, and the revival shows no sign of slowing down.
