Early life

Jaspreet Singh Manak was born on 12 February 1999 in Jalandhar, Punjab. He did his schooling at Hemkunt Public School, Jalandhar, and later graduated from Punjabi University, Patiala. He was good at singing from childhood and wanted to be a singer from an early age, learning the craft while his parents supported the dream.

Career

Manak made his debut in 2017 with the song 'U-Turn', followed by 'Without You'. He shot to fame in 2018 with 'Prada', which crossed 3.5 million views within 20 hours of release and became one of the most-streamed Punjabi songs in India. He followed with the commercial hits 'Suit Punjabi' and 'Boss'.

In 2019 he released his debut album Age 19, a fitting title for a star still in his teens, and sang 'Rabb Wangu' and 'Bandook' for the Punjabi film Sikander 2. His single 'Lehanga' was ranked number 22 on the Global YouTube music weekly chart and number 5 in India, and also featured on the UK Asian Music Chart — making Manak one of the most-listened-to Punjabi artists on YouTube. His song 'Prada' won Best Song of the Year at the Gaana Mirchi Music Awards.

Songwriting

Manak is known for writing his own songs — 'Prada', 'Lehanga', 'Boss', 'Viah' and every track on Age 19. He has also written for others: 'Surma Kala' for Jassi Gill and 'Naam Jatt Da' for Gippy Grewal, plus songs for Karan Randhawa and Nishawn Bhullar.

Personal life

Manak keeps his private life out of the spotlight. He records for Geet MP3 and is based in Punjab, where he continues to write and produce his own material.

Legacy

Jass Manak proved that the new Punjabi pop star could be a writer first: a teenager with a notebook who turned 'Prada' into a national phenomenon and 'Lehanga' into a global chart entry, all before turning 21.
