Duleep Singh was born in Lahore on 6 September 1838, the youngest son of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the founder of the Sikh Empire, and the only child of Maharani Jind Kaur. Ranjit Singh died in June 1839, when Duleep was an infant, and after years of court intrigue and assassinations the boy was brought from Jammu, where he had been living quietly with his mother, and proclaimed Maharaja of Punjab on 16 September 1843, at the age of five. Real power lay with his mother as regent and with the increasingly restless Khalsa army.

A child Maharaja and the fall of the Sikh Empire

The First Anglo-Sikh War of 1845 to 1846 ended with treaties that shrank the empire, placed a British Resident in Lahore and pushed Jind Kaur aside; she was first removed as regent, then imprisoned and exiled from Punjab, separated from her son. After the Second Anglo-Sikh War, the East India Company annexed Punjab outright on 29 March 1849. Duleep Singh, aged ten, was deposed, granted a pension and stripped of his property, which contemporaries valued at some fifteen million rupees. Under the Treaty of Lahore, the great Koh-i-Noor diamond was surrendered to Queen Victoria. It remains in the British Crown Jewels, and its return is still demanded in India and Punjab.

Exile in England and a new faith

The boy was placed in the care of Dr John Login, sent to Fatehgarh in December 1849 and raised deliberately apart from his mother tongue and faith, in an English Christian household. On 8 March 1853, still only fourteen, he converted to Christianity. The following year he was exiled to Britain, where Queen Victoria received him warmly; he became a favourite at court, sat for the court painter Winterhalter, and was made one of the first knights of the Order of the Star of India in 1861. His pension of twenty five thousand pounds a year supported a grand country life, first in Perthshire, where Scots called him the Black Prince of Perthshire, and from 1863 at Elveden in Suffolk, a seventeen thousand acre estate famous for its shooting.

Reunion with his mother and a family of his own

In January 1861 Duleep Singh was allowed a brief, controlled visit to India and was at last reunited with Maharani Jind Kaur in Calcutta. He brought her back to England, where she died in 1863; escorting her ashes to India the next year, he met Bamba Müller, the Arabic-speaking daughter of a German banker and an Abyssinian mother, and married her in Alexandria in June 1864. They had six children who survived infancy, among them Princess Sophia Duleep Singh, who became a leading suffragette in Britain. After Bamba's death in 1887, he married Ada Douglas Wetherill in 1889, and they had two daughters.

His Elveden years also made him a figure of English country life: he remodelled the hall in an Indian style, kept one of the most famous shoots in England, and entertained princes and royalty, even as the debts that would force the estate's sale after his death quietly mounted around him.

Why did Duleep Singh turn against the British?

With the years, debts, a reduced pension and a growing sense of dispossession embittered the Maharaja. Through his cousin Thakar Singh Sandhawalia he re-established contact with Punjab, and in March 1886 he set sail for India, intending to reclaim his heritage and return to the Sikh faith. The British intercepted and arrested him at Aden; there, in a modest ceremony arranged by emissaries from Punjab, he was formally re-initiated into Sikhism. Forced back to Europe, he settled in Paris, appealed to European powers for support, and lived for a time as the centre of a would-be exiled court, before eventually apologising to Queen Victoria and having his pension restored.

Death in Paris and a lasting legacy

Maharaja Duleep Singh died in a Paris hotel on 22 October 1893, aged fifty five. His wish to be buried in India was refused, for the British feared the unrest his funeral in Punjab might stir, and he was buried with Christian rites in Elveden churchyard beside Bamba. None of his children left heirs, so the direct line of Ranjit Singh ended with that generation. Yet his story has only grown with time: a bronze statue of the Maharaja on horseback was unveiled at Thetford in 1999, and his life has been retold in books and in the 2017 film The Black Prince. In Punjab he is remembered as the child king from whom an empire was taken, and the Koh-i-Noor he surrendered as a boy remains its most famous symbol.
