Kamini Kaushal: Lahore born actress and films

Kamini Kaushal was a Lahore born Hindi film actress whose career lasted from Neecha Nagar in 1946 to a final cameo in Laal Singh Chaddha in 2022. She was a leading lady opposite Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand, won the Filmfare Best Actress award for Biraj Bahu, and later became one of Hindi cinema's most respected character actresses.

Early life in Lahore

Kamini Kaushal was born Uma Kashyap on 24 February 1927 in Lahore, then in British India and now in Pakistan. She was the youngest child in her family, with two brothers and three sisters, and her father was Professor Shiv Ram Kashyap, the professor of botany at the University of Punjab in Lahore who is widely regarded as a founder figure of Indian botany. He died when she was a small child, in 1934, but the house remained a scholarly one, and she grew up expected to study as well as to perform.

She took her BA (honours) in English literature from Kinnaird College in Lahore, which made her one of the first well educated heroines in Hindi cinema. Her schooldays were busy ones: swimming, riding and skating, and radio plays for Akashwani, for which she recalled being paid ten rupees. Filmmaker Chetan Anand, a friend of her brother, heard her voice on the radio and offered her a film role. Because Anand's wife Uma was also acting in the film, Uma Kashyap took a new screen name, Kamini Kaushal, choosing a name beginning with K.

A debut that won at Cannes: Neecha Nagar

Her debut film was Chetan Anand's Neecha Nagar in 1946, a story of a poor community fighting a rich landlord who controls its water. The film was sent to the first Cannes Film Festival and won the Grand Prix, the top prize of that year, and it remains the only Indian film to have won that honour at Cannes. Kaushal also won an award at the Montreal Film Festival for her debut performance. A first film could hardly have announced an actress more strongly, and offers followed quickly.

After Neecha Nagar she returned to Lahore and travelled for shoots, but family tragedy changed her life in 1948. Her elder sister Usha died in a car accident, leaving two small daughters, Kumkum and Kavita. Kaushal married her sister's widower, B. S. Sood, a chief engineer with the Bombay Port Trust, settled in Bombay and raised the two girls as her own, later having three sons of her own, Rahul, Vidur and Shravan. She kept working, and became one of the first leading ladies in Hindi cinema to continue playing the heroine after marriage.

Kamini Kaushal is best known for her natural, restrained acting in the leading roles she played from 1946 to 1963, above all Biraj Bahu, and for the long second career that followed as a character actress. In her leading years she worked with every major star of the time: Ashok Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Raaj Kumar and Dilip Kumar. Her films with Dilip Kumar, including Shaheed (1948), Nadiya Ke Paar, Shabnam (1949) and Arzoo (1950), were popular hits, and she played opposite Raj Kapoor in Jail Yatra (1947) and in his first film as director, Aag (1948). In Ziddi (1948) she was the first leading heroine Lata Mangeshkar sang for, and for much of 1947 to 1955 her name appeared before the hero's name in the credits, except in films opposite Ashok Kumar.

The performance that defines her is Bimal Roy's Biraj Bahu (1954), taken from a novel by Saratchandra Chattopadhyay, in which she played a devoted wife whose faith in her husband survives public disgrace. It won her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress, and critics still cite it as an early model of quiet, inward acting in Hindi films. Other leading roles often named with it are Do Bhai (1947), Paras (1949), Namoona (1949), Jhanjar (1953), Aabroo (1956), Bade Sarkar (1957), Jailor (1958), Night Club (1958) and Godaan (1963), her last film as heroine, in which she played a poor farmer's wife in an adaptation of Premchand's novel.

From heroine to character roles

In 1965 she changed course with Shaheed, playing the mother of Bhagat Singh, played by Manoj Kumar. The move was early by the standards of the time, and it opened a long run: she played Manoj Kumar's mother in film after film, among them Upkar (1967), Purab Aur Paschim (1970), Shor (1972), Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974), Sanyasi (1975), Dus Numbri (1976) and Santosh (1989). She was sister in law to Rajesh Khanna in Do Raaste (1969) and his mother in Prem Nagar (1974) and Maha Chor (1976), and she could also play against type, as a scheming woman in Anhonee (1973).

Her work widened beyond films. She wrote stories for the children's magazine Paraag, chaired the Children's Film Society in the late 1970s, and made puppet programmes for Doordarshan under her own banner, making the puppets herself and voicing their characters: shows such as Khel Khilone, Chand Sitare, Chaat Pani and Chandamama made hers the first Hindi children's puppet series of its kind. She acted in the British television serial The Jewel in the Crown (1984) as Aunt Shalini, made the animation film Meri Pari in 1986, and played the grandmother Bebe in the popular serial Shanno Ki Shaadi.

Honours and later life

The honours came across her whole life, not only at the end of it. Alongside the Montreal award for her debut and the Filmfare Best Actress award for Biraj Bahu, she received the Kalakar Awards lifetime achievement honour in 2011, the Kalpana Chawla Excellence Award in 2013, the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015, and a place in the BBC's 100 Women list in 2015. Remarkably, she was still winning acting awards in her nineties: her warm, understanding grandmother in Kabir Singh (2019) won her the Screen Award for Best Supporting Actress and a Filmfare nomination in the same category.

Her last film years kept that pattern of brief, cherished appearances. She played Shah Rukh Khan's grandmother in Chennai Express (2013), the grandmother in Kabir Singh (2019), and made a final cameo appearance in Aamir Khan's Laal Singh Chaddha in 2022, closing a screen career that had begun 76 years earlier. Kamini Kaushal died at her home in Mumbai in November 2025, aged 98. News reports on 14 November 2025 said she had died the previous night, and some listings give 14 November itself as the date. Her family performed her last rites in Mumbai and asked for privacy, and she is survived by her three sons.

Legacy

Kamini Kaushal's legacy rests on range and endurance together. She began in a Lahore that was about to be divided by Partition, in a film that won Indian cinema its first great international prize, and she was still acting, and still being honoured, in the cinema of Shah Rukh Khan, Shahid Kapoor and Aamir Khan. Few actors have worked as leading lady, producer, mother, grandmother, children's writer and puppeteer in one career. For Punjabi readers she also stands as a Lahore story: a professor's daughter from the old city who carried its education and its confidence onto screens across India for more than seven decades.
