Rajendra Kumar (born Rajendra Kumar Tuli; 20 July 1927 to 12 July 1999) was an Indian film actor, producer and director, known across India as Jubilee Kumar. Born near Sialkot in Punjab, he rose from an assistant director's job in Bombay to become one of the biggest stars of Hindi cinema in the 1960s, when film after film of his ran for a silver jubilee of 25 weeks. His best remembered films include Mother India, Dhool Ka Phool, Dil Ek Mandir, Mere Mehboob, Sangam and Suraj.

Born near Sialkot, uprooted by Partition

Rajendra Kumar was born on 20 July 1927 to Lakshmichand Tuli, in a Punjabi Hindu Khatri family. The family lived at Sankhatra, a village near Sialkot in the Punjab of British India, now in Pakistan. His grandfather was a successful military contractor and his father had a textile business in Karachi. Rajendra Kumar studied at Hailey College of Commerce in Lahore, where he took an interest in films and theatre.

Partition changed everything for the family. They left their land and property behind and moved to India, first to Delhi and then to Bombay, where Rajendra Kumar tried his luck in the Hindi film industry. He did not start as a hero. For nearly five years he worked as an assistant to the director H. S. Rawail, on films such as Patanga, Sagai and Pocket Maar, taking small uncredited roles along the way.

How did Rajendra Kumar become Jubilee Kumar?

His first small screen roles came in Patanga in 1949 and Jogan in 1950, where he played a friend of Dilip Kumar. The producer Devendra Goel noticed him in Jogan and gave him his first lead role, in Vachan in 1955. The film was a hit and became his first silver jubilee success, earning him the description of a star being born.

Then came Mehboob Khan's Mother India in 1957, in which he played the eldest son of Nargis's character, alongside Sunil Dutt. The film was a huge success and one of the highest grossing films of its year, and it fixed Rajendra Kumar in the public mind as a serious leading man. In 1959 he had three hits in a row: the musical Goonj Uthi Shehnai, Chirag Kahan Roshni Kahan, and Yash Chopra's first film as director, Dhool Ka Phool, whose song about a child belonging to no religion became famous across India. B. R. Chopra's songless courtroom film Kanoon followed in 1960 and was also a hit.

A silver jubilee meant a film running for 25 weeks in a cinema. At his peak, five or six of Rajendra Kumar's films were running that long at the same time, and the name Jubilee Kumar stuck to him for the rest of his life.

The golden 1960s: Dil Ek Mandir to Suraj

The year 1961 brought a run of successes, including Gharana and Aas Ka Panchhi. In 1963 he starred in Dil Ek Mandir, a romantic drama that won him his first Filmfare nomination for Best Actor, and in Mere Mehboob, a Muslim social film whose songs, composed by Naushad, were among the best selling Hindi film music of the decade. Mere Mehboob topped the box office in 1963.

In 1964 he appeared in two of the year's biggest films: Ayee Milan Ki Bela, which brought him another Best Actor nomination, and Raj Kapoor's Sangam, a love triangle with Vyjayanthimala that became one of the highest grossing films of the 1960s and earned him a Best Supporting Actor nomination. The next year, Arzoo, in which he played a disabled man, brought a third Best Actor nomination. In 1966 came Suraj, a big budget romance whose songs are still played today, and which became his sixth hit in a row.

What set him apart was not showmanship but steadiness. His screen manner was gentle and romantic, with a smile and a voice that suited the musical love stories of the time. Producers trusted him because his films returned their money quickly, and audiences trusted him because the songs and stories rarely disappointed.

Later years: character roles and a producer's chair

From 1969, the rise of Rajesh Khanna took some of the momentum from Rajendra Kumar's career, but he still had successes, including Anjaana and Talash in 1969, Geet and Ganwaar in 1970, and Gora Aur Kala in 1972. In 1978 he bounced back with Saajan Bina Suhagan, opposite Nutan, which was a big hit, and he moved gradually into character roles in the late 1970s and 1980s.

He also worked behind the camera. He produced films through the 1970s and 1980s, and in 1981 he launched his son Kumar Gaurav as a hero in Love Story, which became one of the biggest hits of the year. He later produced Naam in 1986 and Phool in 1993, in which he also made his last appearance as an actor.

Family, friendships and honours

Rajendra Kumar married Shukla Behl in 1954. She was the sister of the film producers Ramesh Behl and Shyam Behl. They had three children: a son, Kumar Gaurav, and two daughters. His closest friendships in the film world were with Raj Kapoor and Sunil Dutt. The two families later became relatives when Kumar Gaurav married Namrata, the daughter of Sunil Dutt and Nargis.

Despite his success, he never won a Filmfare acting award, although he was nominated four times. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri in 1970 for his contribution to Indian cinema. He was also made a Justice of the Peace and served as an honorary magistrate.

Death and legacy

Rajendra Kumar died in Mumbai on 12 July 1999, at the age of 71, after an illness. He had acted in more than 80 films over a career of nearly five decades, from a small role in 1949 to his final film in 1993. India Post issued a stamp in his honour in 2013, and in 2020 a biography of him, Jubilee Kumar, by Seema Sonik Alimchand, was published.

His films still play on television and in song programmes, and the title Jubilee Kumar still means something simple in Hindi cinema: a star whose films did not just open well, but stayed, week after week, until the whole country knew the songs by heart.
