Adampur is a town in Jalandhar district, Doaba, about 21 km north-east of Jalandhar city — and one of the most strategically famous small towns in India. The Adampur Air Force Station, built in the 1950s about 6.7 km from the town, is the Indian Air Force's second-largest airbase, home to MiG-29UPG squadrons, with a storied record in the 1965, 1971 and Kargil wars. A passenger terminal opened in 2017 brought commercial flights under the UDAN scheme from 2018.

History
Adampur town itself is an old Doaba market settlement between Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur. Its national fame dates to the 1950s, when the Indian Air Force built a major airbase on the town's outskirts — about 6.7 kilometres away, beside what is now NH-3. The base was in action within a decade: in September 1965 Pakistani aircraft targeted Adampur (the attacks failed), and Pakistani paratroopers dropped on the base were rounded up with the help of local villagers; in December 1971 Adampur's interceptors covered Pathankot while its runway was repaired after the first Pakistani strike.
In the 1999 Kargil conflict, Mirages flying from Adampur struck targets at Tiger Hill, Muntho Dhalo and Tololing. The base — home to No. 47 Squadron's MiG-29UPGs and an underground hangar counted among Asia's largest — sits within 100 km of the Pakistan border. In 2017 the Airports Authority of India built a passenger terminal adjoining the base, and commercial flights began on 1 May 2018 under the UDAN regional-connectivity scheme. On 13 May 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a widely reported visit to the base after the India–Pakistan confrontation earlier that month.
Geography & people
Adampur town lies between Jalandhar (about 21–28 km to the south-west) and Hoshiarpur (about 27 km to the north-east), on the Doaba plain at roughly 230 metres above sea level. It is a municipal council and a railway station on the Jalandhar–Hoshiarpur line. The town's life is intertwined with the base: air-force families, civilian staff and the businesses that serve them, alongside the farming hinterland's wheat and paddy.
Punjabi dominates; the town has the mixed, transient character of all garrison towns — postings come and go, but the bazaar remembers every squadron.
Places of interest
The airbase itself is restricted, but its presence shapes everything: the well-kept air-force township, the memorials, and the passenger terminal that now connects the Doaba by air to Delhi and beyond. Adampur town's bazaar, its old gurdwaras and temples, and the surrounding farmland make for a typical Doaba halt — with the unusual distinction that the roar overhead is the sound of MiG-29s.
Notable people
Adampur's notable people wear uniforms: the generations of air warriors who have served at the station — from the interceptor pilots of 1971 to the Mirage crews of Kargil — and the villagers who, in September 1965, caught Pakistani paratroopers in their fields and handed them to the police. The town's honour roll is written in squadron histories.
