Where is Bhoma?

Bhoma is a village of Majitha tehsil in Amritsar district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Majitha, about 4 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Majitha community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037442, and it covers 513 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,830 people in Bhoma: 1,474 men and 1,356 women, living in 538 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 513 hectares, the population density works out to about 552 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 920 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 248, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,268 people, about 45 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 80.09 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 84.68 per cent and women at 75.2 per cent. The census recorded 861 workers, about 30 per cent of the village. Of the 825 main workers, the largest group, 327, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 257 other workers in trade, transport and services and 221 cultivators on their own land. A further 36 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (175 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (252 hectares). About 84 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 226 cultivators and 342 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
