Where is Bohru?

Bohru is a village of Amritsar II tehsil in Amritsar district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Amritsar, about 12 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Attari community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037584, and it covers 397 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 4,752 people in Bohru: 2,507 men and 2,245 women, living in 875 households, an average of about 5.4 people per household. Spread over its 397 hectares, the population density works out to about 1,197 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 895 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 580, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,777 people, about 37 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 64.81 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 68.94 per cent and women at 60.26 per cent. The census recorded 1,708 workers, about 36 per cent of the village. Of the 1,529 main workers, the largest group, 736, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 471 agricultural labourers and 300 cultivators on their own land. A further 179 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Bohru's land. Of the village's 397 hectares, 336 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (203 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (133 hectares). About 61 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 16 hours a day. The census recorded 310 cultivators and 519 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
