Where is Chabba?

Chabba is a village of Amritsar II tehsil in Amritsar district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Amritsar, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Attari community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037581, and it covers 871 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 6,537 people in Chabba: 3,523 men and 3,014 women, living in 1,232 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 871 hectares, the population density works out to about 751 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 856 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 795, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 2,855 people, about 44 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 66.63 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 69.67 per cent and women at 63.16 per cent. The census recorded 2,253 workers, about 34 per cent of the village. Of the 1,790 main workers, the largest group, 983, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 410 cultivators on their own land and 250 agricultural labourers. A further 463 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Chabba's land. Of the village's 871 hectares, 744 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (323 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (421 hectares). About 127 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 16 hours a day. With 436 cultivators and 279 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Education in the village runs through one government primary school, one government middle school and one government secondary school, so children can study in the village up to Class 10. The village also had an anganwadi centre and an ASHA health worker.

Health facilities recorded inside the village in 2011 included a primary health centre, a primary health sub-centre and a dispensary. The village had its own post office. It also had a PDS ration shop and mobile phone coverage. Banking was available in the village itself, with a commercial bank branch. Domestic electricity supply was recorded at 16 hours a day.

The directory recorded Amritsar, about 10 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was more than ten kilometres away. Amritsar II, the tehsil headquarters, and Amritsar city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Varpal, Mandiala, Pandori and Bohad.
