Where is Chachowali?

Chachowali is a village in Majitha tehsil of Amritsar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Majitha, about 28 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Majitha community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037451, and it covers 326 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,330 people in Chachowali: 1,191 men and 1,139 women, living in 454 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 326 hectares, the population density works out to about 715 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 956 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 301, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 953 people, about 41 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 57.42 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 63.56 per cent and women at 51.1 per cent. The census recorded 1,006 workers, about 43 per cent of the village. Of the 535 main workers, the largest group, 229, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 211 other workers in trade, transport and services and 80 agricultural labourers. A further 471 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Chachowali's land. Of the village's 326 hectares, 291 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (107 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (184 hectares). About 35 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 245 cultivators and 477 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Education in the village runs through one government primary school and one government middle school, so children can study in the village up to Class 8. The village also had an anganwadi centre and an ASHA health worker.
