Where is Iban Kalan?

Iban Kalan is a village of Amritsar II tehsil in Amritsar district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Amritsar, about 8 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Attari community development block and is served by the Iban--Kalan gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037587, and it covers 507 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 4,645 people in Iban Kalan: 2,433 men and 2,212 women, living in 940 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 507 hectares, the population density works out to about 916 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 909 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 590, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 2,417 people, about 52 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 60.52 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 64.32 per cent and women at 56.39 per cent. The census recorded 1,971 workers, about 42 per cent of the village. Of the 1,422 main workers, the largest group, 740, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 356 agricultural labourers and 267 cultivators on their own land. A further 549 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (292 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (143 hectares). About 72 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
