Where is Khanwal?

Khanwal is a village in Ajnala tehsil of Amritsar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Ajnala, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Ajnala community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037145, and it covers 245 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,440 people in Khanwal: 754 men and 686 women, living in 253 households, an average of about 5.7 people per household. Spread over its 245 hectares, the population density works out to about 588 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 910 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 254, about 18 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,193 people, about 83 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Ajnala, the tehsil headquarters, and Amritsar city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Chhanah, Sarang Dev, Bhainian and Kotli Koka.
