Where is Loharka Khurd?

Loharka Khurd is a village in Amritsar II tehsil of Amritsar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Amritsar, about 14 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Verka community development block and is served by the Loharka--Khurd gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037619, and it covers 174 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,121 people in Loharka Khurd: 591 men and 530 women, living in 202 households, an average of about 5.5 people per household. Spread over its 174 hectares, the population density works out to about 644 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 897 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 141, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 551 people, about 49 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 75.41 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 82.65 per cent and women at 67.45 per cent. The census recorded 537 workers, about 48 per cent of the village. Of the 482 main workers, the largest group, 302, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 109 cultivators on their own land and 37 household industry workers. A further 55 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Loharka Khurd's land. Of the village's 174 hectares, 158 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (124 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (34 hectares). About 16 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 12 hours a day. With 114 cultivators and 35 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
