Where is Mahawa?

Mahawa is a village in Amritsar II tehsil of Amritsar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Amritsar, about 23 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Attari community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037660, and it covers 1,123 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 3,333 people in Mahawa: 1,785 men and 1,548 women, living in 542 households, an average of about 6.1 people per household. Spread over its 1,123 hectares, the population density works out to about 297 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 867 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 417, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 952 people, about 29 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 67.18 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 70.86 per cent and women at 62.96 per cent. The census recorded 1,132 workers, about 34 per cent of the village. Of the 1,070 main workers, the largest group, 611, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 348 other workers in trade, transport and services and 100 agricultural labourers. A further 62 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
