Ludhar is a village in Majitha tehsil of Amritsar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Majitha, about 4 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Majitha community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037488, and it covers 379 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 3,076 people in Ludhar: 1,623 men and 1,453 women, living in 581 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 379 hectares, the population density works out to about 812 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 895 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 409, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,947 people, about 63 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 70.75 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 75.5 per cent and women at 65.42 per cent. The census recorded 1,123 workers, about 37 per cent of the village. Of the 897 main workers, the largest group, 677, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 121 cultivators on their own land and 79 agricultural labourers. A further 226 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Ludhar's land. Of the village's 379 hectares, 316 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (159 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (157 hectares). About 61 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. The census recorded 124 cultivators and 172 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
