Where is Rokhey?

Rokhey is a village of Ajnala tehsil in Amritsar district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Ajnala, about 3 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Ajnala community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037360, and it covers 175 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,490 people in Rokhey: 781 men and 709 women, living in 270 households, an average of about 5.5 people per household. Spread over its 175 hectares, the population density works out to about 851 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 908 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 163, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 671 people, about 45 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 64.2 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 72.02 per cent and women at 55.38 per cent. The census recorded 496 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 451 main workers, the largest group, 331, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 95 cultivators on their own land and 22 agricultural labourers. A further 45 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Rokhey's land. Of the village's 175 hectares, 148 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (110 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (38 hectares). About 27 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 97 cultivators and 31 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
