Where is Baja Chak?

Baja Chak is a village of Dasua tehsil in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Dasua, about 8 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dasua community development block and is served by the Baja--Chak gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030749, and it covers 209 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,007 people in Baja Chak: 518 men and 489 women, living in 197 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 209 hectares, the population density works out to about 482 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 944 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 97, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 683 people, about 68 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 84.18 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 87.96 per cent and women at 80.35 per cent. The census recorded 231 workers, about 23 per cent of the village. Of the 161 main workers, the largest group, 103, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 36 cultivators on their own land and 14 agricultural labourers. A further 70 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (174 hectares). Farm power supply was recorded at 10 hours a day.
