Where is Kharak Singhwala?

Kharak Singhwala is a village in Tapa tehsil of Barnala district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Bhadaur, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Sehna community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 040065, and it covers 344 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 700 people in Kharak Singhwala: 380 men and 320 women, living in 132 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 344 hectares, the population density works out to about 204 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 842 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 84, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 385 people, about 55 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 66.23 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 73.9 per cent and women at 56.73 per cent. The census recorded 234 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 214 main workers, the largest group, 120, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 61 agricultural labourers and 33 cultivators on their own land. A further 20 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (235 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (88 hectares). About 21 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. The directory recorded Bhadaur, about 15 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was more than ten kilometres away. Tapa, the tehsil headquarters, and Barnala town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Alkran, Talwandi, Jangiana and Majuke.
