Where is Jalal?

Jalal is a village in Rampura Phul tehsil of Bathinda district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Bhagta Bhai Ka, about 4 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Bhagta Bhaika community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035648, and it covers 2,014 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 6,706 people in Jalal: 3,589 men and 3,117 women, living in 1,280 households, an average of about 5.2 people per household. Spread over its 2,014 hectares, the population density works out to about 333 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 868 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 679, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 2,296 people, about 34 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 65.85 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 68.67 per cent and women at 62.67 per cent. The census recorded 2,336 workers, about 35 per cent of the village. Of the 2,059 main workers, the largest group, 906, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 764 agricultural labourers and 353 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 277 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Jalal's land. Of the village's 2,014 hectares, 1,309 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (873 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (436 hectares). Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 938 cultivators and 892 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Education in the village runs through one government primary school, 2 government middle schools and one government senior secondary school, so children can study in the village up to Class 12. The village also had an anganwadi centre and an ASHA health worker.

The village had its own post office. It also had mobile phone coverage and an internet common service centre.
