Where is Bhilewala?

Bhilewala is a village of Faridkot tehsil in Faridkot district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Faridkot, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Faridkot community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035492, and it covers 1,146 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,205 people in Bhilewala: 1,138 men and 1,067 women, living in 407 households, an average of about 5.4 people per household. Spread over its 1,146 hectares, the population density works out to about 192 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 938 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 257, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 758 people, about 34 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 68.48 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 72.7 per cent and women at 63.93 per cent. The census recorded 844 workers, about 38 per cent of the village. Of the 790 main workers, the largest group, 328, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 312 agricultural labourers and 134 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 54 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (1,001 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (83 hectares). About 61 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 331 cultivators and 323 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
