Where is Ghugiana?

Ghugiana is a village in Faridkot tehsil of Faridkot district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Faridkot, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Faridkot community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035532, and it covers 948 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,852 people in Ghugiana: 1,504 men and 1,348 women, living in 551 households, an average of about 5.2 people per household. Spread over its 948 hectares, the population density works out to about 301 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 896 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 342, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,662 people, about 58 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 61.67 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 68.67 per cent and women at 54.01 per cent. The census recorded 1,051 workers, about 37 per cent of the village. Of the 956 main workers, the largest group, 519, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 357 cultivators on their own land and 74 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 95 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Ghugiana's land. Of the village's 948 hectares, 888 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (559 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (329 hectares). About 60 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 360 cultivators and 547 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Education in the village runs through one government primary school, one government middle school and one government secondary school, so children can study in the village up to Class 10. The village also had an anganwadi centre and an ASHA health worker.

The village had a sub post office. It also had a PDS ration shop, mobile phone coverage and an internet common service centre.
