Where is Barhandinwala?

Barhandinwala is a village in Jalalabad tehsil of Fazilka district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Jalalabad, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Guru Har Sahai community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 034887, and it covers 168 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 504 people in Barhandinwala: 280 men and 224 women, living in 102 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 168 hectares, the population density works out to about 300 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 800 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 53, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 11 people, about 2 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 81.6 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 91.29 per cent and women at 70.48 per cent. The census recorded 184 workers, about 37 per cent of the village. Of the 147 main workers, the largest group, 87, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 47 other workers in trade, transport and services and 13 agricultural labourers. A further 37 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

The directory recorded Jalalabad, about 10 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the village has its own railway station. Jalalabad, the tehsil headquarters, and Fazilka town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Rukna Qasam, Chak Rakh Amir, Ghulla and Shamash Din Chishti.
