Where is Chak Kheowali?

Chak Kheowali is a village in Fazilka tehsil of Fazilka district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Fazilka, about 18 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Fazilka community development block and is served by the Chak Kheowal gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035030, and it covers 580 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,119 people in Chak Kheowali: 1,101 men and 1,018 women, living in 423 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 580 hectares, the population density works out to about 365 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 925 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 237, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,504 people, about 71 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 68.17 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 79.77 per cent and women at 55.73 per cent. The census recorded 787 workers, about 37 per cent of the village. Of the 590 main workers, the largest group, 292, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 161 agricultural labourers and 137 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 197 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Chak Kheowali's land. Of the village's 580 hectares, 517 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (501 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (16 hectares). About 57 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. With 332 cultivators and 291 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Neighbouring villages include Ghatianwali Jattan, Chak Pakhi, Ghatianwali Bodla and Jore Jand Urf Chimnewala.
