Where is Chak Roranwala?

Chak Roranwala is a village in Jalalabad tehsil of Fazilka district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Jalalabad, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Jalalabad community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 034954, and it covers 524 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,077 people in Chak Roranwala: 567 men and 510 women, living in 216 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 524 hectares, the population density works out to about 205 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 899 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 126, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 366 people, about 34 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 61.72 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 67.2 per cent and women at 55.58 per cent. The census recorded 550 workers, about 51 per cent of the village. Of the 313 main workers, the largest group, 166, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 136 agricultural labourers and 8 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 237 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Chak Roranwala's land. Of the village's 524 hectares, 467 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (467 hectares). About 55 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 173 cultivators and 364 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Education in the village runs through one government primary school and one government middle school, so children can study in the village up to Class 8. The village also had an anganwadi centre and an ASHA health worker.

The directory recorded Jalalabad, about 15 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was five to ten kilometres away. Jalalabad, the tehsil headquarters, and Fazilka town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Chak Panj Kohi, Ratta Khera, Chak Qabarwala and Chak Khuranj.
