Where is Paliwala?

Paliwala is a village in Jalalabad tehsil of Fazilka district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Jalalabad, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Jalalabad community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 034962, and it covers 597 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,971 people in Paliwala: 1,545 men and 1,426 women, living in 580 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 597 hectares, the population density works out to about 498 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 923 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 383, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 2,556 people, about 86 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 65.57 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 75.93 per cent and women at 54.48 per cent. The census recorded 1,248 workers, about 42 per cent of the village. Of the 1,020 main workers, the largest group, 611, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 247 cultivators on their own land and 155 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 228 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (526 hectares). About 62 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. The directory recorded Jalalabad, about 15 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was five to ten kilometres away. Jalalabad, the tehsil headquarters, and Fazilka town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Kathgarh, Chak Paliwala, Roranwala Urf Tarewali and Chak Sarian.
