Where is Sawahwala?

Sawahwala is a village of Jalalabad tehsil in Fazilka district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Jalalabad, about 5 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Guru Har Sahai community development block and is served by the Basti Sham Singh Wala gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 034933, and it covers 647 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,805 people in Sawahwala: 938 men and 867 women, living in 358 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 647 hectares, the population density works out to about 279 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 924 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 164, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 423 people, about 23 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 76.48 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 84.06 per cent and women at 68.39 per cent. The census recorded 875 workers, about 48 per cent of the village. Of the 729 main workers, the largest group, 521, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 104 other workers in trade, transport and services and 102 agricultural labourers. A further 146 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (66 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (525 hectares). About 39 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
