Where is Sadana?

Sadana is a village in Dinanagar tehsil of Gurdaspur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Dinanagar, about 12 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dinanagar community development block and is served by the Kothe Sadana gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 027891, and it covers 320 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,616 people in Sadana: 834 men and 782 women, living in 286 households, an average of about 5.7 people per household. Spread over its 320 hectares, the population density works out to about 505 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 938 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 195, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 859 people, about 53 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 72.06 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 75.78 per cent and women at 68.08 per cent. The census recorded 490 workers, about 30 per cent of the village. Of the 471 main workers, the largest group, 241, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 144 agricultural labourers and 85 cultivators on their own land. A further 19 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Sadana's land. Of the village's 320 hectares, 294 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 53 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (50 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (3 hectares). About 23 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 86 cultivators and 155 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Dinanagar, the tehsil headquarters, and Gurdaspur town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Maha Rajpur, Chak Alia and Bhatoya.
